The Correct Style Number Plate
Discussion
This is an absolute bugbear of mine. So many pre 2001 cars have number plates with the narrower post 2001 letters.
I think it really spoils the car and makes it look more modern than it needs to .
I know all new plates are supposed to have kitemark and the postcode of the place its done, but there are plates that can be ordered online as 'show plates' and if you forget to take them off after the show, are the police really going to be bothered about a period correct plate.
I changed mine to correct size letter ones 12 months ago, and even had the original supplying dealer added to the number plates for more authenticity.

I think the chances are remote but it only takes one to spoil your day.
It's perfectly legal for a car to have period correct plates, provided that they were supplied and fitted before the cut-off date.I think the chances are remote but it only takes one to spoil your day.
Obviously you have looked after them well, so they still look brand-new.

Best man for these is here at :

He did me some period dealer plates in the correct font for 1983.

So you're annoyed by people running legal post 2001 plates on their pre-2001 cars, because the letters are narrower than they used to be, but you're happy to run illegal plates that don't have a kite-mark or postcode on them? I think it really spoils the car and makes it look more modern than it needs to .

Strange priorities!

If it had the original plates it would be totally legal.

If it had absolutely identical, but brand new plates it would be illegal!
It might be the correct legal position, but I'd have no problem with a car wearing brand new plates, only illegal because of the lack of a manufacturer and BS number.
I have recently purchased this one-owner Golf GTi. It's very original apart from the modern style number plates that were added by a VW dealer when it was put on long term display in their showroom. I will be getting some period style show plates from Pukar, who have been recommended to me by a fellow Golf owner.

Lovely looking car, but I don't remember wheels like that on mine. are they spares or what? As regards number plates, I am trying to find stick on letters of the correct size for my XKSS on her new French plates at the moment. I only started looking yesterday so I'll visit a few shops today..

The wheels are the standard 14" steels. Not often seen because most GTi buyers added alloy wheels. I think they suit the car. Good luck in your search, I assume you need the condensed French font?Yes, they were easier in the old days, and that is why my car is now registered in France. The DVLA are on a crusade and withdrew the registration of my XKSS in the UK, demanding that the car be re-registered under IVA rules. This is now happening more than you might think, and no matter how I argued that Lynx were a manufacturer, no matter how I sent them every Lynx brochure as proof, they turned a deaf ear to every argument, including before anyone asks that the car change took place over 30 years ago as specified in section R of the new declaration for taxation. In France, no matter what replica you have, if you can prove it was registered over 30 years ago then you are clean and green. But on the other hand France are throwing all the history of old cars out of the window too. All old style registrations will be withdrawn as of 31/12/21 and modern plates issued to fit in with the current system. And then look at Greece; Is this the future for all of us?

ETA:= And in future, all of you, I would be very careful about publishing photos of your dearly beloved modified car. Blank out the number plate before you do. Big Brother really is watching.

Sadly, yes, this is very much a look into the future for classic car owners within the EU....and I don't have any doubt that it will be the same in the UK as well even if we end up out of the EU. With luck and a following wind we might not end up quite as draconian here, but Govt/VOSA/DVLA will continue to make life much harder for the owners of OEM spec classics, let alone modified ones.http://www.ekathimerini.com/237760/article/ekathim...

Indeed.I know of a lot of hot rod owners as well as modded classic owners that have now wiped/pulled old 'build threads' from various forums and online sources and some forums have literally died a death in terms of car talk and mods discussions.
The problem is, if you actually, you know drive the thing (rather than it being some sort of financial asset) and other people take a photo and don't blank out the number plate, it's not rocket science to match cars up with numbers especially if the car is otherwise quite distinctive.

So much for European harmony on vehicle laws then (wasn't that why we got told the MOT requirements were changing) , I'd agree I've seen an awful lot of build threads get deleted and quite a lot modified classics go up for sale, one of my classics was modified back in the late 60's , it was magazine featured in Cars and Car Conversions, it's registered correctly as what it is on the V5 and I've got all the history for it, still doesn't mean it's safe if what happened above can happen to your Lynx.http://www.ekathimerini.com/237760/article/ekathim...
