Fiesta XR2 slipping away
Discussion
I’d buy it. Still perfectly salvageable, although impossible to tell how much it would need from there.
Looks similar to a Capri near me. Parked up on a gravel drive on a house at the side of a country main road. I know a couple of people who have stopped to ask if they’d sell it. Always been the wife of the owner who has answered and said she’d love for it to be sold, but her husband won’t part with it. First time I know someone asking about it was in 2009 and guess it must have sat there for at least a year at the time. First you could see the tyres going flat, then slowly it’s got covered in algae then rust. When it was first parked there it looked in really good condition, but it’s going to be very run down now.
Apparently it hasn’t moved because he couldn’t get it started, but it can’t be difficult to sort out a 1.6 Pinto (I think that’s what it is), so there’s no chance he’s ever going to restore it now, so it’s sad to see. Where it’s parked it’s bound to have attracted a good number of people to stop and ask about it.
When it was first parked there it wouldn’t have been worth much because it was before lower-spec Capris really went North in value and it’s only a 1.6 Laser (I think), but now they have risen that car has deteriorated. Sad to see really.

Yeah, shame that. Not everyone's cup of tea but I always liked the XR2's. Had a couple of Mk1's and a Mk2 for a while.
Looks like a car that's been left standard too, still got its dealer plate on the back and car itself looks quite straight. Should have a red decal fading down to nothing over the silver, cant work out if its been removed or just faded away?
Merlin, have you tried approaching the owner?

Shame, but they weren't that special back in the day!
And it won't have a Pinto engine in a FWD Ford!
Either a Kent X-flow or a CVH depending on age - Kent X-flow would be my guess based on the Y plate and early shell.
Trouble is it would cost pretty much the same to restore as an XR3i/RS1600i/RS Turbo which will always be worth much more, so while they might make an economic proposition to restore I can't see that one working out too well.
Back in the 80s I considered those options, but in 1984 I bought a 1982 2.8i Capri - RWD and 6 cylinders just seemed so much better!

I would have thought restoring something in this condition wouldn't be worth it and you'd be better off buying a good one in the first place. Then I checked the price of good ones - HOLY s
t!! This is pristine Porsche 944 money...

I recently sold my black mk1 XR2 (in slightly better nick than that!), partly because I got bored of finding bits when it broke.

That thing is way beyond redemption.
There are some XR2-specific bits that are like rocking-horse s
t and even general mk1 parts can be hard to source.
There just aren't enough of them and enough of a scene around them for people to be making new bits.

Are there any '80s classics for which parts supply isn't poor?
The high end brands support their classics - it's just not economically viable with mass produced cheapies.https://www.mercedes-benz.com/en/mercedes-benz/cla...

If you're pockets are deep enough you can get the factory to restore every nut and bolt....

German ones. Porsche supply tons of 924 bits still, VW for Golfs, BMW for E30's. Not cheap though. I don't get XR2 love. I thought the Fiesta was a nasty little tin can in any shape or form. The fact that XR2 money will buy a really, really nice Alfasud Ti with (a lot of) change says how skewed it all is. Bizarre. I had an RS1600i back in 1988/9 and don't wish to own another. I mean, it was okay but typically Ford FWD harsh, cheap and nasty really. How much is one of those turds worth now??!!

I don't know about 80s, but things like MGB's you could build from new spares, because there is more of a scene.
I wonder if stuff like Golf GTis, Peugeot 205 GTi's are easier?
They're more difficult I'm sure. I can get anything for my TR – literally anything – overnight. Sometimes the quality is a bit iffy mind...I wonder if stuff like Golf GTis, Peugeot 205 GTi's are easier?

beetle/transporter etc
But they're also '50s/'60's/70's classics, and to be honest they're pretty simple beasts.beetle/transporter etc

I know Merc are excellent for their old cars (if pricey), and guessed Porsche might also be. Didn't realise BMW were good too. Audi are not renowned for their support of older models but to be fair to them they are getting a little better. I still spend a lot of time gleaning parts on forums and eBay though.I don't get XR2 love. I thought the Fiesta was a nasty little tin can in any shape or form. Agree on the Fiesta though, but then I don't get the whole Beetle thing either – nasty cars IMO. (Although they did provide a sort of seed-bed for the Quattro so shouldn't complain to much).
