Pre Scrappage Scheme Cars?

Just been having a good chat with my mate, Saturday night eBay has made me realise that there's no cars left that interest me, the only ones are priced way out of reach (Saph Cossie, Fiesta RS Turbo, 205 GTI 16v), but pre scrappage scheme days I'd be drowning in "Taxed and tested, no knocks or bangs" examples for next to nothing. So in the hopes of igniting a thread that doesn't descend into Brexit, Trump or IMakeMoreThanYouitus, what cars do you wish were still cheap and plentiful? I'll get it started with:

Saph Cossie,
RS Turbo's
205 GTIs
XR2's
XR4x4's
405 MI16's

You were 9 when the scrappage scheme came in so how were you drowning in all those cars when they were cheap?

Having just turned 17 at that time I don’t remember any of those cars being particularly cheap then either. They were all well known performance variants and although not at the values they are now, they had retained some value still.

I didn't say I was, I said I would've been...

I've got my old AutoTrader mags from the early to mid 00's when I used to bury my head in them every month, stuff like XR2s and 205 GTI's were dirt cheap.

The reason why those cars are expensive have nothing to do with the scrappage scheme. They were worth more than 2k 10 years ago. There were the odd interesting cars that were scrapped, but the overall majority of the cars that were scrapped were the run of the mill cars.

The reason so many were scrapped was that the insurance was dearer than the car's value. A 17 yr old with a Cossie or M16 Pug? Virtually uninsurable.

Really? In 2002 when I was 21 I paid £1300 to insure my Sapphire RS Cosworth. When I sold it 4 years later I was paying around £500 to insure it.

Three things:-
a) You list the top of the range, rather than the run of the mill "popular", "L" trim models with the basic engine.
Most of the scrappage cars were pensioner spec, with the odd MGB thrown in.
b) Cars are cheap(er) when they are unfashionable, costly to repair, or low mpg. Later they are re-evaluated.
If you want cheap go unloved, say a Mk3 GTI, although the MK5 may be a better buy.
How much is a Chimaera these days, still gettable at £10K. "Taxed and tested, no knocks or bangs"
c) Inflation, although it was cured by the last Labour Government, it still happens/hits. Dad used to lament the RR Silver Ghost or 3 litre Bentley's he could have bought in the late 1950s. You could argue these were scrapped when the Ten Year Test (MOT) came in, in 1960. Then reality hits, the Ghost was his annual allowance as a student, and the Bentley was as much as the 3 bed semi he bought years later.

Whilst the base spec/run of the mill cars may have made up the majority of what was chopped in on the scrappage scheme, there were still a LOT of interesting cars disposed of overall. Tons of classics and performance cars went. MK1/2 Golf GTIs, 205 GTIs, XRs and FWD RSs of various flavours, quite a lot of transaxle Porsches, the odd 928, quite a few interesting Japanese performance models etc etc

Eh, I remember being 16/17 in 09/10 looking at Ford Capri's as potential first cars. I do vividly remember picking out clean-ish examples for £1000-1500.

That of course being before my dad advised me that A. I'd end up backwards inside a tree, and B. To check insurance prices. Ended up with a £600 Nissan Micra complete with £2.5k insurance bill. Personally, I blame Brexit uncertainty.

The cars that aaron lists are all around 30 years old.

It's rather like attributing the lack of 90 year old people alive today to the effects of World War 2

There was a list floating around somewhere, I forget where. The trouble is, it gave the descriptions from the DVLA database, which is notoriously unreliable as it's basically whatever the person filling in the new registration application decides to write in the boxes. So some of the stuff that sounded really exciting probably wasn't anything of the sort. Wasn't there something like an "Audi Quattro sport" on this list? In reality I suspect that was more likely to be a barely-MOTed rusty 80 sport than a SWB ur-quattro.

I've had a look through a while back and agreed, the majority was nothing special and would have been heading for the scrapper before long anyway. What I wasn't impressed with was the rule about not being allowed to be stripped and parts sold on however some must have slipped through the net, seem to remember a thread on here a while back where someone had managed to get hold of an engine out of an Alfa 166?

Just had a quick scan at the top of the list and there certainly is some interesting stuff there that is collectable now, only got as far as the BMW's but saw a load of Alfa 33, 75, 155, Austin Minis, BMW 318is, M535, 635 etc etc.

I'm not going to let that casual untruth pass. If anyone 'cured' inflation it was at first Thatcher, who brought it down from Labour's dizzying excesses in the mid-late '70s, then Major who brought it down still further (after Lawson's late '80s blip) and set a monetary policy that Blair more or less adhered to for some years and which continued the downward trend. Under Brown that trend was reversed, but under the Lib/Con coalition and then Conservatives it's gone down again. I accept that there were other factors at work (OPEC in the early '70s etc) but in terms of inflation vs. who was at the helm that's the way the stats record it.

But this isn't NP&E and I make this comment only for balance.
