This must be a record price for one of these. It looks spectacular and they have always been on my 'would like' list. Prices for them seem all over the map, although apparent good ones seem to be advertised high teen's and up. Any experts/owners comment on this price and the market for them? Its certainly in the "find another like it" category.

Ideally I'd like a European market LHD one for export to the US, but LHD prices seem to command a further premium.

It was bloody nice, the best I have seen. In a heartbeat if I had 40k to spare.

I cannot comment from a position of any great knowledge of these cars, but it seems reasonable to expect that restoring even a good one to the standard of this one would cost at least the purchase price, and even then it wouldn't be as crisp as this original car.

Caveat of course is I haven't seen the car in the metal and am going from the auction pictures and info.

I do think that the very, very best original cars in this kind of condition will always command a deserved premium over even a very good restoration.

Lovely cars, yes worth £40K - the ET headrests are missing though?

That's an exceptional and on the face of it original car....you could spend the same and some restoring one to that condition

That is certainly an exceptional price for a V8 Coupe, just a couple of years ago a top notch example would have been £15k - £20k. This one is worth the asking money as far as I can see, it was sold new at a dealer local to me and my next door neighbour was the receptionist there at the time...

Indeed. The same price as a well equipped Merc C class. And won't depreciate 40% as soon as its driven out the dealer.

I have a friend with a better one than this in his parents garage! One owner from new, all documentation, under 20,000 miles, barely used for 30 years but entirely rust-free with an immaculate interior as it's stored well. Stunning, but quite valuable now.

I wouldn't necessarily assume that another one in similar condition will fetch the same price. There must have been at least two or three determined bidders going after that.

Usually Rover enthusiasts are very careful with their cash!

Had a lovely looking P5B Coupe in the early '90s.

The only car I've actually hated the sight of in the end, never owned such a jinxed, unreliable car.

I still shudder thinking about it.

A family friend who served with my father in the RAF always had a black P5 , his father was in the civil service and dealt with ministry cars at the end of service , so he had the pick of the bunch . His cars were always immaculately presented. Always dramatic if he was in ceremonial uniform , he was a flt Sargent in the music service so had lots of gold braid on his ceremonial uniform.
Black P5 Rovers always look better with a bit of braid nearby .

Quite a few of those Ministerial / MOD P5B Saloons are still knocking around, at the end of production in June '73 part of the final batch of cars were held back and put into storage at Ashcurch for future use, hence their relatively high survival rate. A lot of P5Bs, both Saloons and Coupes, were bought new as retirement cars which were passed down through families which explains why there are still a good number of them around today. Total production between 1967 and 1973 was 9,018 Coupes and 11,501 Saloons.

^^^^^ This, if the restoration is properly done. Do love a P5B.
