My granddad's car - identification please

I'd say it's a Jaguar Mk IV .

Bentley 4¼ around 1938 would be my guess.

Bentley 4¼ around 1938 would be my guess.

Roof line of the Bentley is flatter, the Jaguar is more rounded. Also this car has spinners which says it's got wire wheels with disc covers whereas the Bentley has hexagon shaped centres to the hubcaps.

Yes, I agree, not a Bentley, a Jaguar.
The Jaguar has quarter lights & Bentley has none.

How true. I often think that when you see car parks in the late '30s with rows of cars, all neatly lined up, all black and all looking the same!

I think it does look very much like the 1948 Jag - but an earlier model maybe.

The side lights on top of the wings aren't right for the Mk V, could it be an earlier SS Cars model?

I thought I answered this in the 2nd post? Yes, we all agree it's an SS Jaguar 1 1/2, 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 Litre (subsequently known as the Mk IV) with special equipment ACE wheel trims, probably a heater and few other bits.

I think I'd say an SS Jaguar from around 1936-7. What makes me uncertain is that I thought they introduced the quarter lights and the 'faired in' side lamps at the same time. But, quite possibly the old side windows were used up before the old wings. Also the top of the radiator looks a bit deeper, but it's hard to judge from an old photo.

I'm sorry, you're right, you did, I'd originally miss read your post and thought you'd said Mk V and I'd thought it looked earlier... more SS time frame. Then I forgot to re-check after wondering through the pictures as it went on to being a Jaguar. The subsequent picture you posted must be a later car as the side light pods are different.

I say Bentley. The side lights on the Jaguar Mk IV are frenched in, on the Bentley sit proud. But in case you granddad buys a Mk IV, does he need a manual?
