E-Type hardtop

Was browsing through an old copy of PCs magazine from 2007 and for the SC Parts advertisement they were selling S1 and S2 E-Type hardtops for £490. Today (last time I checked) you''ll be paying about 5 grand, more than a used hatchback. I know people will say "it's inflation..." etc, but come on, 490 quid was not a huge amount of money in 2007, not much different to today; I could've easily afforded £490 on the low wage job I was in at the time. Shows we are being ripped off and prices are getting ridiculous on certain things. The Machine Mart ad prices looked like they are more or less the same as today.

I sold a replica E-Type hardtop for 200 quid earlier this year, albeit needed some work doing to it (a few marks etc) so the price was right. I'd have been lucky to have got even £500 for it in mint condition.

In mid 2007, I bought a pretty nice S.1 hardtop from a lovely guy who had sold his 63 roadster. I paid circa £450 for it.
The following year " when I got ill" I Stupidly sold ( gave away ) my dismantled, 2 owner from new, original bill of sale and papers, 67 opalescent maroon, series 1 roadster, complete with the hard top, to someone from Switzerland for £7,200 complete with the frigging hard top......
The buyer re shelled my E into another body shell he had.....

I bought a replica hardtop 2 years ago and spent the next 2 years fettling and building it. Not easy. I think it was circa 3.5k plus painting etc.

Ten years back I seemed to have collected a few TR6 Hard Tops. I sold all but one and despite changing the cars drive immensely they weren’t particularly easy to sell.

But now try and find one and if you do you’ll pay a hefty price. I guess it’s to be expected since classic cars have gone up so why not the tops. .

I've still got a couple Lee, been in the shed for years, also got a couple of Surrey tops too, have to dust them down and take them to the boot fair for sale ..... still dont think there worth the silly prices there selling for though.

12 years ago doesn't seem all that long ago, and even then alot of classics had soared in value during that period, especially E-Types, XKs, Healey's. So this justifying for prices for accessories and parts like hardtops doesn't make sense other than the people who pay the high prices are simply being extorted because the manufacturers know some people will pay anything because they have the money to own the cars in the first place. Next thing you'll know chrome bumpers will be selling for 3 grand for set, when at the moment they are relatively cheap; probably the cheapest thing you can buy for an E-Type. I've seen E-Type ashtrays for about £200 lol.

Who's gonna pay 800 quid for a few strips of chrome for an hardtop?.

Admittedly the hardtop I sold was for an E-Type kit car, nothing like a genuine hardtop in any way, but even so £200-500 is what they should fetch imo, not 3-5 grand.
