Well, you don't see many of these very often....looks pretty neat to me.

(I know they weren't a factory build ;-) )

Interesting.

I've seen it done on quite a few Zephyr/Zodiac Mk1 and Mk2's, but not on many other cars.
Looks really good.

Just manages to keep about the 8 point rule though with such a structural change to the shell.

Certainly eye-catching but the lack of quarterlights in the doors would spoil it for me.

Can't decide whether the B post has been moved back and therefore that the doors have been lengthened.

I would love to attempt a conversion like that, but with the rules as they are today there's probably no point.

I don't think the rules mention the number of doors. And it's probably not taken anything away structurally. Converting a 2-door to a 4 might be more of a problem. Anyway, for this, couldn't you claim you've merely permanently locked the back doors?

Pretty sure the doors have been lengthened, so B post repositioned, looking at where they end along the sill compared with looking at a normal side view. Doors have been modded anyway with the removal of the quarter lights, and the same for the rear area where the rear quarter light post has been removed. Custom glass made for the sides no doubt.

B post moved means its a structural mod, thereby loosing all your 5 points for bodyshell.

Given that it was altered over 23 years ago, wouldn’t it be exempt (assuming it’s registered as a 2-door on the V5)?

No, mods need to be documented as being pre-1988 to be exempt.

I think its rather smart, I can see Breadvan72 tearing around the dusty Caribbean tracks in it, just needs a cup holder on the dash for his Pina Colada.

I'm not quite sure that I see the point of this conversion, the shape of these cars would never be confused with a coupe so why remove the rear doors? The auto box would have to be replaced with a 4 speed o/d manual for me unless the owner requires it for medical reasons.

Put simply I would prefer an original 4 door like the 1969 car I owned briefly 20 years ago - fond memories indeed. Hat's off to anyone who has kept one of these lovely cars on the road however.

I'm not the DVLA/DVSA and it does seem that they can be a bit arbitrary. The gov website is not completely clear. It states that no substantial changes are permitted and the monocoque has to be of the same pattern as the original. 'Pattern', but to what detail?

In their guidance notes on 'substantial changes', the second link below, a substantial change comes down to a change in the 'technical characteristics'. For the purposes of the body, that presumably means its overall structural integrity and its ability to support critical components. I don't know where that puts moving the B-post and welding it to the back door on a 1960s designed car.

If anyone has more or better info than what's in the two links below, I'm sure many of us would like you to share it.

Two-door coupes Mk 2s look good when nicely executed smile
