Hi,

I am looking to import an american car to own a long train

I have done some research around cost of importing and do know tax is paid at 5% on cars over 30 years and no duty so that leaves me with cargo fee of around £1200 + uk port fee and registration so around £1500.

However when looking to get a decent car they are all over 8k in dollar and I wonder how some UK sellers are selling clean Cadillac deville as low as 7 k or less .

A blazer listed for 5k . Am I looking at wrong forums for finding cars?

I like Chevy impala and Cadillac Seville or Deville or Buick electra. I want a saloon long car which is tax and MOT exempt.

I appreciate any advice here.

If you are looking at ebay prices, beware over half of the cars listed are scams, usually the clue is the price (cheap) & in the listing it will say call ☆☆☆☆, or email & offer free delivery anywhere. If you look at some of the American car groups on Bookface there's some shippers that will also help you to source the car of your choice.

Seems opposite ot the newer stuff, I want a newish Charger 2014 - 2017 and they can be had for $18k to $25k for a decent Hemi model at a dodge dealer, yet over here they can be up to £40k on auto trader, more is its a SRT or similar.

I wonder if the huge collector and restore scene in the US is having an impact on prices over there?

I was watching some "Chasing Classic Cars" that Wayne Carrini did over Christmas, they were the early ones filmed 2010 ish and the £ was strong against the dollar, I really wish I had purchased some, they were literally half price!!

Try 'Bring a Trailer' online auction site past sales for idea of realistic Amercian car values. Remember to factor in cost of overland transport to port which can be significant if car sourced in Midwest, and your own shipping insurance (shipping company insurance is typically very basic)

I live in Charleston, SC, a major east coast port. I've imported from the UK to the UK and also used Kingston, and they were great.
Transporting a car across the US is pricey. Depends on if you want covered or open. Obviously covered costs more. Often cars are relayed from truck to truck across the country too. As a ball park I think cross country, covered, is a min of $2,500, maybe $3,500. Open, maybe $1500-2000? Really depends on locations. Some companies are much more reputable than others. I shipped an XJS open from California to SC, arrived very dirty. Also a Daimler SP250 from Toronto to SC, covered, arrived great.

I moved from the UK to the US in 2004.

I'd be happy to help anyone interested in buying a car in the US to ship to the UK, so PM me. I'm not really into American cars but have a good friend who is.
