Hi guys, i'm thinking of buying a classic car from Denmark, it will be a 1959 totally restored car, whats the procedure with it getting into the UK, what kind of tax do i pay (value is 20k) and whats the procedure regards an MOT, will it have to have one ?
Thanks in advance

No idea.

I am in Denmark fairly often and happy to drive it back to UK.

Isle of Wight.

I was joking, but I am actually/maybe/slightly up for it.

I travel fairly often to DK, into Billund airport.

It's in Europe, so until Saturday no duty will apply, but after that I have no idea. I have bought two cars from Germany and imported into France, so again, the same thing, and all I had to do was show a bill of sale, take the German papers to the Préfecture, (oh - had to get an MOT first but if over 40 yrs old that won't apply in UK) paid my money and got a new registration and all was done and dusted. Virtually painless operation.

I would suggest you google NOVA and VIN insurance cover - that will lead you through the necessary bits of paper for uk import

If importing into France, similar - google Quitius fiscal and control technique as starters.....

For a classic the quitus fiscal is necessary, but it is a walk-through. Since the car is over 30 years old all they wanted was the receipt for the car from where and when I bought it (UK privately, proper receipt from vendor) and then I needed the contrôle technique, the "Attestation" from the FFVE and fill in the papers and send them off, and Bob's your uncle, even if Fanny is your aunt. The fly in the ointment is the Attestation, since there is now a six month delay for one, and if you get the paperwork wrong they send it back, you correct it, and the file goes to the back of the queue and the six months starts all over again. Luckily I have friends at the FFVE and mine took two weeks, but that is highly irregular, and even my French friends were astounded. You will then be entitled to a "carte grise de collection", which means an MOT every five years.

Ah I see. I go to Bilund also periodically for the aforementioned toy manufacturer. It’s their HQ location and I assist them with product recall / crisis mgt arrangements.

From what I understand of the agreement we have with the EU up until the end of the year, things are just carrying on as normal while they discuss how much more complicated they want to make everything from 2021.

The only tax you would have to pay is the annual VED, which as the car is from 1959 is presumably nothing. You would also pay the first registration fee, which IIRC is something like £50. This covers the admin at the DVLA to register it and the fact that it costs nothing to change the keeper for a car for its whole life.
