Interesting cheap semi-classic?
Discussion
Hello all,
If I come out the other side of this virus thing with my job and savings I thought I might treat myself to a new car. What with lockdown and the uncertainty I'm limied to just playing the ebay game for now. I have a work car so doesn't have to be practical or reliable particularly, but I don't want to be fannying about with rust. I could buy a mini, beetle or MGB at that money, but not one that's without rust. Don't mind "untidy" though.
Budget - £1,000 - £1,500 max
Ideally small/light
Can be a bit crap or a poor man's GTI
Current thoughts are:
Reliant robin/Rialto (winning so far)
Fiat 126 (non-rusty ones out of budget maybe?)
Metro 1.4 (don't judge me!)
106/306 1.4 (see "poor man's gti")
Mk2/3 fiesta perhaps not interesting?
Original Panda
What say you, Pistonheads?

Not sure you'll get an original Panda for less than £1500 that isn't rotten, unless you travel to Italy for a scruffy LHD car.
Just had a look at Ebay ,not a single original for sale.
I just has a look on eBay end car + classic for an old Panda after I posted - Jesus Christ, what happened! They were a cheap car 5 minutes ago!Just had a look at Ebay ,not a single original for sale.

Old people. My Dad bought a really clean late model one for well under a grand, from the archetypical little old lady who was stopping driving.Just had a look at Ebay ,not a single original for sale.

No rust? Don't think so for a grand!
I got an 1800 Eunos last year, 100k on the clock, no rust
There are bargains out there, the owners groups on Facebook is the best place to buy.
If you are handy with a spanner, buying an Auto and converting to manual is a good way to say a grand or so!
Not small but definitely a bit crap! Even the number plate spells crap!
I had an older Carina Mk II with 101k on the clock and it ran like a Swiss watch.

Older Jap stuff is available, there's a 95 Celica floating round on there too.
Austin Maestro might be open to an offer

Have you thought about a Saxo? VTR or VTS?
Almost the same car as a 106 but they seem to be a lot cheaper. I just missed a one owner, 39000 miler VTR that went for £550 locally. Plenty on Ebay/Gumtree well within your budget and a great wee drive. Get a good one and keep it good and it can only go up in price in gthe future.
