Just came across this video of the London Motorfair in 1981, so thought I'd share.

Since the NEC started charging more than £5 for parking I haven't been back. I bought this book a few years ago and having been to the Motor Show at Earls Court quite a few times I found it fascinating:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0750965274/ref...
It includes some background on how it was built - I never knew it had could have a massive ice rink!
But I knew they could fill bits of it with water for the Boat Show.
Seems such a shame that it has been demolished - surely at least that iconic front view should have been listed?
I'm sure arriving at the NEC by train is the best way, but living in the South East (as most of the UK population does) getting there would probably take me half a day by the time I got into London, got across it by Tube to get to the right terminus and then headed up towards the Midlands!

Not necessarily, depending upon where in the south east you are. Deal (about as inconvenient a departure point as any) to the NEC is about an hour more than driving at the moment. Admittedly the trains are a bit screwed due to the coronavirus problems, so it may be a lot closer than you think. Plus you can take full advantage of the catering on offer...Turbobanana said:

Well I just had a look for tomorrow, and after a 20 minute walk to my nearest station for an 11.30 departure (Blackwater, Hants) and a change at Reading I could get to Birmingham International at 13.36. Cheapest fare is £35.50.But spending £35.50 spent on petrol I could pick up a mate near J13 on the M25 and we could both get there quicker and cheaper - until we had to pay to park the car!
So it's no wonder people drive, as I could leave home any time I am ready. If I got the timing wrong for the train it could be a 59 minute wait.
BTW given the current lockdown situation this is all theoretical for now - actually probably quite a long time.
