Registering an imported classic (40yrs old)

Can someone give me a duffers guide to registering an import that is >40 years old i.e would be MOT exempt? I'm used to the V55/5 process having previously imported a newer used car but would be useful to have some pointers on how to do the paperwork without having to MOT it first (getting any MOT round here at the moment is proving tricky).
Not that it's any use but the car in question has a French CT valid until May.
