I was at Goodwood the day he had his big accident, then later in life had the good fortune to meet him several times, he was our Guest of Honour at Lynx for one of our customer days in the late 80s. Always charming and truly one of the 'Greats', an irreplaceable character gone forever.
A jolly decent chap.
Sometime around 1990 I was looking to build a replica of the SMART rally Triumph Spitfire, as driven by his secretary Val Pirie around 1964. There were a few things that I was curious about (all no doubt now on the web), so I simply looked up his name in the London telephone directory and called the number.
Within a couple of rings the great man answered and I spent a very pleasant half hour or so having a chat about the car in question and the SMART Lotus Elan. He never made me feel that there were more pressing things to do and seemed genuinely interested in the project.
RIP
