If you take a 70's car that is tax, mot and ULEZ exempt and drop a new crate engine into it, are you still tax, mot and ULEZ exempt?

Will the DVLA be aware of the engine swap ?

Classic cars are exempt from ULEZ.

Putting in a later engine loses the mot exemption unless it was an engine that was regularly used 30 plus years ago.

Have you not heard of google ?

No problem, its good you "knew about google" - do you need help to use it ? LOL

What car were you thinking of destroying by adding a modern engine when there is no need to - its exempt !

Chevy c10 shell, just looking at engine options, could get an old small block but wondering how 'rules' are effected by getting a 350 small block crate engine.

I've done some YouTubing about how to use this Google thing and despite searching on it, it's still not clear so going to continue to discuss it on here if that's ok.

Chevy C10's were fitted with a small block V8 when new and back in the day, so any new crate engine will be okay. Just put it in, send the new engine number and everything will be okay. A friend put a rover v8 engine into a hillman imp, he lost the MOT exemption but retained the "classic car" status for tax free historic status. People were wrecking imps in the 1970's by putting rover v8's in imps even then ! He tells me with all his "upgrades" he still gets modded classic car insurance for £120 per year !

You will have no problems with putting a nice V8 in a c10 !

That isn't 100% correct, as it would depend on the car, engine and other factors in question.

Its difficult to be 100% on any government regulations ! They are always written in such a way so different people read different rules (just look at the omnishambles of the covid-19 regulations, all written in a all encompassing way ! so the police do what they like (ie going through peoples shopping to find items that weren't "essential" ffs)

Until they are tested in court, we are swimming blind (no one as far as I know has been taken to court as of yet !)

It is when he used a cheap v8 engine, with a massive auto box and a rigid rear axle ! Honestly a standard Imp is quicker in most traffic situations .....lol

There is someone building one on here https://forum.retro-rides.org/thread/209569/v8-imp
not much Imp left !

A new 350 sbc will be fine as said, as its effectively the OEM replacement of the original engine.

Its when you start to get into later front clip swaps and LS engines etc that things start to get tricky regarding the MOT etc., because of the points deductions.

But what is the entry criteria for even being part of the points system? Although I think this is referring to registration status, not MoT exemption

DVLA should know you've swapped the engineas you are supposed to inform them of the change in engine number.

I've read and re-read the regulations concerning 'maintaining historic status' and 'substantial modifications'. I believe that you can swap an engine or part of it, for one of the same type, though it may be of different capacity.

I'll use a Jaguar example as I know more about them. I'm fairly sure that you could put a 4.2 litre, iron block, 1986 Jaguar XK 6 cylinder engine into a 1965 Jaguar 2.4 litre Mk2 without a problem as it's the same 'basic engine.' If you put a 2002 Jaguar AJ-V8 or V6 in, then, according to the regs, DVLA would have every right to remove the historic status. Could you swap to a 1986 AJ6/16 engine? It's a Jaguar in-line 6 cylinder, but it doesn't satisfy the regulations because it's not in any way close to the Jaguar engines in the time of the Mk2. You might get away with it, but couldn't be sure.

And after all that, there's a get out clause. You can use more recent parts as replacements if they 'improve efficiency, safety or environmental performance.' If you can invoke that, then almost anything more recent is allowed; replace the whole Mk2 with a more modern Jaguar XE and claim the historic status of the Mk2?

In the end, it all depends on the whims of officialdom and your own conscience of what's in the spirit of the original car.

This doesn't apply to the OP, you lose only 1 point for a change of engine.

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/radically-...

You need 8 points to retain registration (and not go Q reg)

5 points are given for chassis / body modification
2 points for front and rear suspension
2 points for original axles
2 points for transmission
2 points for steering
1 point. for engine.

For MOT exemption different rules apply ! ie "substantial modification" and watered down with "environmental performance" , obviously written in such a way so they lawyers can make a "mint" in court etc.
