Can anyone please advise on where the next classic car auction will be at?

I know I can search this on Google, but after some of the goings on this year I'm also trying to get recommendations of where it's safe to put a car. Or in other words, where would you be happy to put your own car, and be confident of no issues with payment etc.

Has to be one that will take more modern classics, specifically 2003 registration year.

Depends on what kind of car it is and what kind of value. Anglia Car Auctions are coming up soon, and do well with a wide variety of stuff, and are good to deal with. You've also got CCA/Silverstone auctions but not sure how soon they are. Historics are higher end and do well, but not always with modern stuff unless rare/high value. You could also try online with The Market, or Collecting Cars.

I've sold through ACA. It was a painless process, I'd happily use them again.

I’ve used Silverstone / CCA before and had no problems - in fact I will probably be entering a late 90’s car in the September CCA auction.

Three friends of mine have used The Market and they’ve been happy with the service and prices achieved.

The online auction platforms like Collecting Cars & The Market seem to be gaining a lot of traction at the moment - the former only charge commission on the buyer and the latter only on the seller - being platforms they just facilitate the sale so the monetary transaction between buyer and seller is done privately - unlike traditional auction houses you keep the car at home giving potential buyers the chance to view in person / test drive if they wish - the downsides however are the sales window is quite short unlike a traditional auction house where you consign your car some way in advance giving more people the chance to see it's for sale - some commentators will say there's a lack of transparency in the sales description but in my experience the level of detail being given in terms of text and pictures is far higher than other mediums albeit you are reliant on the accuracy of the information supplied by the seller

Does anyone have experience of the service provided by H&H? I have been in contact with them about consigning one of my cars and they have been making all the right noises, they have a date at Duxford in Oct and I'm planning for that.

You can also send your car to The Market and they'll take care of the whole thing. The short window can be a problem, but it needs to be weighed against the much lesser fees etc I think.

I've bought and sold through H&H. I haven't sold through them much in recent years and I wouldn't submit a modern classic or 'low' value classic to them. They do have some nice staff though and Rory especially is great to deal with, very helpful and pleasant. Duxford is a nice venue.

Have spoken with a couple of places from the above posts, one has came back with an estimate.

Their estimate turns out to be less than WBAC are offering, perhaps a bit behind the times, surprised by this.

The estimate is just a guide and they often like to guide low to encourage interest.

Low guides are Normally given to encourage buyers, not sellers.

It was based on previous sales some months ago apparently, they expect the same now.

But from what I see elsewhere, there's been a sharp increase in values over the last month or so.

In that case sell to WBAC with no hassle. Personally I'd punt it at the auction with a reserve. You only need two who really want it.

I agree with that, problem for me is I'm a fair bit away from the CCA auction, which is not a big problem, but it's September so a bit of a delay.

The place I called could be done sooner, but didnt fill me with confidence.

I need to have a think.

low guides are also given because they want sellers to be realistic and they want the best chance of that car selling.

I've been considering using a classic auction to sell. But the fees are a bit steep unless you're expecting 5 figures plus for your car. ACA are one of the cheapest at £75 plus VAT to enter but with 6% (+ VAT) fee to sell. There's a minimum of £120 though. So, say a £5k sale, that's £450 in fees and you have to get it there. And you end up with about £4500.

CCA want £125 + VAT to enter (and that's if you provide your own details, photos and video, otherwise it's £250 + VAT and they do the lot)

Their sale fees are only 4% plus VAT but there's a minimum fee of £350 + VAT. Equivalent to a sale price of £8750!

So, same £5k hammer price leaves you £4430 minus other costs getting it to Coventry.

It depends how much you value your time. I sold through ACA after privately advertising. I wasted ages showing people the car, dealing with daft queries and other such nonsense. The final straw was a guy who agreed to buy then had buyer's remorse a couple of days later.
The contrast with ACA couldn't be greater. A couple of phone calls, the car was collected, no paperwork and the car sold at close to what I was advertising it for. Bliss.

I accept a lot of people do it to save time, and also perhaps not that bothered how much it goes for but this one is a case in point.

A 1995 Volvo 850 S with 162k miles but with an Mot until July 2021. Seems to have been stood for over 9 years, sold for £470 including the buyers premium. So the hammer price was £350 on Saturday. The seller had to pay £234 in entry and seller fees. So they end up with £106! I'm unsure if the £39 in VAT is recoverable because it's a 'service charge.'

Sticking it on ebay with no reserve, or even removing a few bits to sell and scrapping it would have been a better result! The full leather interior must be wanted by somebody.
