I wasn’t aware that a 4 door MK11 Cortina Lotus was built, or that the Police used them.
This one is said to have hit a wall, in Berkshire, between Aylesbury and Thame, close to the Bottle and Glass pub, in Gibraltar, in March 1972. The car also hit an electricity pole, leaving locals without power for several hours.
An Inspector was @ the wheel, hospitalised but not seriously injured.

Guessing that it was no less than 2 years old, in 72.

30 secs on Google has told me there were 2 x 4 door Lotus Cortinas used by the Thames Valley Police. The four doors were based on a 1600E body. The 2 x 4 doors were sequentially registered on a G plate (so 68/69) in a batch of 6 cars which included 4 x 2doors Its reg was FBH 46[ ]G.

When I was a sprog I was in the passenger seat of a 1600E that had gone off the road and across a concrete drive spanning the ditch.

I still remember the front passenger wheel coming through the floor then the carpet flopping back.

Then the windscreen fell out. biggrin

No one was hurt but the car was destroyed.

Actually they didn't always call it that, as after '68 Ford referred to it as the Cortina Twin Cam wink

thumbup I've never seen that in their official literature. Pretty sure the handbooks I sold were later than '68.
