Just been watching a guy on YouTube who has an engine block and cylinder head which maybe the only one in existence, now I’m quite old and I never new this prototype existed so just a heads up really, he is making a crank and camshaft and hopes to mate it to an a30 gearbox and put it into an a30.

I'll wish him well with that project. laugh!

4 cylinder A Series engines were pitiful, so a 2 cylinder doesn't look promising!

An engine which was in production for 5 decades, produced in millions and licence-built in Japan was pitiful? By what measure?

Thanks for the link, fascinating viewing for sure.

He’s probably forgot more about engine building than most on here know.

To be fair, the Datsun versions of the A series were far superior to the original.

This might become clear once the full build is done, but he's making the crank with 1 up 1 down.

Presumably it's 4 stroke, so shouldn't it have both up together so there's a bang every revolution?

Trade-off : even firing vs less primary vibration.

By the measure of someone that only judges things by modern BMW standards, by the look of it.

PH: the history of technological development (doesn't) matter.

In the 1950's the a series was a superb engine. Nothing exotic or expensive about them. Yes there were more complex engines with more power but that was not affordable to most people. They were easily tuneable, and the many variants made them a popular choice for for many home tuners. They also had a very successful motor sport career. By todays standards they will seem poor but for petrol heads in the 70's or 80's it was the a series or ford crossflow.
