What did I see?
Discussion
Just saw a lovely silver classic car on Epping High St and I don't know what it was.
Split rear screen, louvred, and (I think) one central exhaust pipe. Looked '50s or '60s and wasn't a VW Beetle or a Corvette. Closest I can come up with is a Bugatti Type 57 Atlantic, but I'm not sure that's right.

Yes! A Tatra 87. Gorgeous thing and tasty V8 burble too.
Rear mounted, air-cooled V8.One of the fastest pre-WW2 cars, due to its modern era drag coefficient.
Field Marshal Erwin Rommel owned one IIRC.

The original widowmaker. I think they were eventually banned by the Germans because so many officers were killed from crashing them as staff cars.
I read that about them too. I recall it was attributed to the (relative) quiet and composure of the car at what were ridiculously high speeds for the day, which led them to hit corners a lot faster than they expected, and running out of physics
If you want to see some Tatras you need to get yourself over to a Bicester heritage event. I think there is either a tatra specialist there or a collector with some in storage. Either way, the few times I have been there has always been at least three or four out and about on display together.
They are an acquired taste, but I like them

Lucky! I've never seen one in the metal, but it's on my lottery win list. Is it somewhere you venture frequently? Would be interesting to know if it's a regular thing to see it round there.
