Classic VDub bug advice
Discussion
Hi All
I need some advice on a beetle I picked up as my first aircooled project for cheap.
I bought it sight unseen mainly due to the fact it has had a fair amount of work prior done to it.
It is 1971 with a 1776cc engine swap with twin Weber.
Car runs great but as I cannot sit still my plan for the coming winter months is to take the engine out and revamp (Engine removal is mainly due to the main oil seal leaking and no prior evidence of a clutch being replaced)
My question is I had the car dynoed and I am currently looking at a MAX
RPM at Fly of 4805
Road BHP of 57 at 4200 RPM
FLY BHP of 90.5 at 4200 RPM
FLY lbft of 120 at 3585 RPM
What CLutch and flywheel would people recommend
How would you start going about getting some more horses from this car
What would you replace while the engine is out?thanks in advance

Replace everything while the engine is out 😄 probably start with gearbox mounts and work out.
Is it IRS or swing arm?
Probably some different heads would help and a 4 into 1 exhaust.
Best bet is to use it and work out what needs upgrading with brakes and suspension before doing much to engine.

It has a swing Axile. That's a fair thing to add to the list.Is it IRS or swing arm?

It still has rear drums so I will start with a disc conversion and move on from that
Thanks for the help

What do you want out of the car ?
Cruising or drag racing ?
More power will come with normal tuning big CC head work, dual carbs better exhaust etc or fit a massive turbo maybe even a Porsche engine
Just simply driving around. It's fine where it's at I just thought while I am replacing parts what would people recommend the exhaust one is something I didn't even consider for some reasonCruising or drag racing ?

My friend (sunroof 64 bug) does track days, has Jenvey throttle bodied hybrid turbo 2.4l engine, drag built gearbox. Runs IRS, disks all round and a cage now. Has megasquirt. Estimate is 250bhp.....
I had a LWB GT Buggy upto 10 years ago running a 1915cc lump with a mild cam and very lightly ported stock heads. Also ran megasquirt with VFR800 throttle bodies. I reckon it was about 10bhp away from wheelies. Roundabouts in the wet had to be taken on zero throttle or the front end just slid off the road.
Volkszone is an excellent call.
