Fines for late Nova registration

I imported my classic lotus europa from the Netherlands last December before brexit so there were no taxes to pay. At the time I rang HMRC about registering and was told Its not necessary untill I get the car roadworthy. Now that the car is ready I have looked online what to do and the gov website states I may be fined £5 a day after 6 month period. I rang the HMRC again and was told that I will not be fined.
How do I know what is correct, the HMRC call centre or their website.

If you have documentation to prove that you imported it when you said you did then no problem. Phone NOVA they are very helpful. They will even phone HMRC and talk to them on your behalf. Well at least they did for me.

Thanks healeyfan. You say it will be no problem and it may have gone well for you but without proper confirmation, I may still be liable for fines.
