I've 3 kids, so if I was looking for a classic that's good to drive, fits 5 people, what would I be looking at?

I'm struggling to think of anything.

Jowett Javelin. 3 in the front, 3 in the rear, four at a push if you take the arm rests out.

classic range rover, also room for the dogs / bikes / etc
good to drive might have to be considered, though once you get used to it the tilt on cornering is just like those tilting trains!

Do all 5 of you need to fit in? Or would it be just you and the kids?

If the former, then lots of suggestions already. If the latter then a load of coupes also fit the bill.

I’ve got three kids but it would only ever be me plus kids as a max, so I got a 2+2.

a 2+2 would work, thinking about it, that's the right option.

of the above, nothing rolls or that size, rover SD1's make me fell ill. I'd prefer 70's or before ideally.

OK, ignoring budget, how old/tall are the kids? Do any of them need a child seat? Will they be happy sat in a smaller rear seat? How much room do you need behind the drivers seat? How long do you plan to keep the car - will the kids still fit?

From experience this is important stuff as this is the sort of info that’ll rule cars on or off your list before you’ve even looked at price.

The child ages are the important bit, as you say regarding the child seat issue.

This, and a convertible version if you wish too. a W123 2.8 saloon with aircon would be my choice. I assume here that rear doors would be advisable with six little feet.

But if you want something really different, this might tickle your fancy. I've always loved their understated look:-

Serious question, do kids need child seats in classic cars? Legally not just because they are small. Plenty of classics don't even have seat belts so I can't see the point of a booster seat. I did a quick google but ended up in a mumsnet style loop.

I've been around this loop before. I have a letter from the then minister for transport. If the car has seat belts then legally you are required to carry the kids in a type approved child seat. If you have a classic car old enough to not require seat belts and you remove the seat belts then they are not required to be seated in type approved child seats.
The requirement for the approved seats is regardless of whether doing so would cause safety issues. When I played this game in about 2006/7 ish when the law changed the car I was interested in was an XK150 FHC, it's effectively a 2+2, the rear seats are small and were ideal for carrying my two small things. When I bought the 150 it had no seat belts and so I had it sent to Stuart Quick of QUICKFIT SBS LTD & Reflex Safety Systems to have belts fitted properly. The requirement to put the monsters onto booster seats would raise their shoulder height above the top anchor point which means that if they were thrown forward the belt would compress their spines. I had a discussion with the ministry about this, they told me to talk to Stuart Quick who was their recommended expert on such things. I told then he'd done the work, they said speak to him anyway. I did, he was pulling his hair out over this, they had come to him for advise and then they'd ignored everything he'd told them and just took the current European regs and applied them retrospectively. He was talking to another customer who he'd fitted an FIA spec 5 point harness to child sized bucket seat and the ministry wouldn't accept that either. As I said above, I ended up getting a letter from the then minister clarifying the ministry's position.
I posted on the Plod & the law group here and a copper replied saying the maximum penalty would be £25 fine and no points, if you feel you are doing the safest thing possible for your kids under the circumstances what's £25. His other comment was that any magistrate would laugh them out of court for trying to prosecute a parent for putting a seat belt on a child when it was legal not to and that the Daily Fail would love to have that court case as a front page story.

As a kid the first car my father had in my life time was a Humber Hawk, bench seats front and rear. There were four of us kids sitting in the back, no seat belts in the Humber. There was easily enough room for another kid in the front. For short trips there never seemed to be a limit on just how many of us kids would fit in the car. Probably not a sensible option today.

I'm going to get flamed for this (because when I were a lad we didn't have all this seatbelt health and safety nonsense) but make sure what ever you choose is vaguely safe for your kids.

I recently had an accident in my classic Land Rover (I was stationary, the other driver basically shat herself and drove into me on a country lane). The relevance is that my vehicle doesn't have seatbelts and has quite a, shall we say uncompromising approach to passenger safety with a metal dashboard. I'm looking at fitting belts to mine, because I don't want to think about the harm it would do my kids getting catapulted into the dash panel in even quite a low speed crash.
