A bit like a music festival, I think this one has a bit of something for everyone.

Initially I was drawn to the development story of the XJ40; the rather protracted story as we all know along with the side diversions of XJ41 and XJ42 and of course, to my eye, the gorgeous XJ90.

Now comes the artistic interpretation of what happen next…..

Go along with video and surmise the conversation. (All done with a Brummie accent of course!)

Scene 1. The Staff Canteen. Browns Lane. Coventry.

“Heh Pete, take P2 (Prototype 2) down to the track and we’ll get some tyre temperatures with the new Teves system on the pave, will you?”

“Ok Bill, shall I take the transporter?”

“Oh – Sorry! I forgot – that’s being used for ’42, what else can you take?”

“Dunno, everything else is being used and Sir Will. won’t let us hire anything thing or spend any money ….we could use Brian’s XJ6, that was used last week for a caravan feature and still has the two bar attached”

“Ok - Yep ! that’ll do, grab the trailer out of the workshop and I’ll see you down there”

Scene 2. Test track aka, Gaydon,

“Hiya! – Got the ’40 here on a trailer – where do you want it?

Ed: The mind boggles doesn’t it?

I remember growing up as kid and getting all excited as Car Magazine released “Scoop” photos of the new XJS exiting from Browns Lane. A lightly camouflaged XJ40 trundling down the A46 on the back of an open trailer…...well, lets just say happy times.smile

I was talking to a client about my liking for the Jag brand and mentioned my own XJ40 project whereupon he gave me an interesting nugget of information that I didn’t know.

He was based at RAF Honiley and regularly saw the '40 being tested there. For some peculiar reason he remembers the registration number of the prototype, which was B258 OAC.

Now he tripped the reg. number out of his subconscious like it was a coffee selection from the machine and he freely admitted he doesn’t know why he always remember it but there you go.

I’ll data log it along with my own bank of reg. numbers belonging to my first Spitfire, TR6 , TVR, etc etc; weird/sad/trainspotting -heh? Lol!

Final observation from the video….

What’s the car in the background?

SD2 ? – I first saw it in a barn in Studley Castle in the early ‘80’s. Today it’s presented in green but the car here is in brown
