Been given a fairly tidy 1970 VW Type 2 that was in someone's shed for many years. Alas the family cannot find the keys and I have searched the old bus inside out. It's not rotten and and I need to move it in the next few weeks as they are moving home. What's the best way to get keys for a 50 year old VW that I think I can get going with a day's work?

I can’t help with the key, but you are very lucky to be given that, single/crew cab bays are rare things

Have you tried the local VW dealer? They may be able to trace the VIN and supply a key. Not sure what you'd need by way of proof of ownership, mind.

There plenty of companies that will supply keys from the code number stamped on the lock. Try Custom and Commercial or Just Kampers.

I have pumped the wheels and thankfully the handbrake was not left on. Generally sound vehicle but some rot at the back which should be easy to repair. I will search ignition and locks and see if I can find a code. When I get it home will take a picture!

Does it have a steering lock? If not, just hot wire it.

Or...does this help? https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...

Wow thanks so much everyone for advice/guidance. Off today to see if I can get a number from a lock.
