Suppose it's 1968 and you want to buy some new cars. Using the hindsight from 2022 what would in retrospect have been good choices for the following? Not to stick in a barn as an investment but to run for 5 or 10 years.
A) Cheapish daily driver.
B) Refined and powerful but vaguely affordable motorway cruiser.
C) Cheap sports car.
D) Expensive performance car.
Being good to drive, reliable and decent value for money by the standards of the category are important. Price not so much.

A) Triumph 1300 (quite advanced for its time (FWD, safety features) and good quality)
B) Mercedes 300SEL 6.3 (no point in messing about with anything less!)
C) Ginetta G15 (not sure if it was available in 1968? If not, the Midget is a good call)
D) Maserati Ghibli (simply because a Daytona or Muira would be too obvious!)

Not the Ford Escort as someone suggested. I had a 1972 one, absolutely rotted through, the only car that has ever needed a clutch replacement.

Ways like the look of the Triumph Stag. Or an old SAAB of that period. Our new English teacher in 1965 had a LHD SAAB with Swiss plates, now that seemed ultra-cool to us lads (not quite as cool as the young female French language ‘assistantes’ we seemed to have come to us each summer term).

Honestly though - and I speak as someone who loves them - GT6 isn’t really a sportscar. As the name implies it’s a miniature GT, crossed with an AGA.B) Rover P5B Coupe (thirsty but if I can afford four cars then who cares!)

Yes that did cross my mind. Most European cars were exotic with high price tags whereas Jags were always total bargains.The good thing with the Elan is you could still buy it as knock down kit that you built yourself, to avoid the purchase tax. I had the little brochure and always fancied one in metallic brown over white. Never did see one though.

Jaguar XJ6 - launched in 1968
Alfa-Romeo Duetto - rather better than your average MGB though the Lotus Elan was a better driver's car.
