This car was owned by my Uncle in the late 50s - but what is it ? (My guess is it might be a Singer ?)

I wonder if it is still around ?

Pretty sure it's a Riley of some sort - probably one of the many variations on the Nine, like a Lynx or Gamecock tourer.

I'm pretty sure it's a Singer with non-original wings.

Agreed, the radiator badge is the right size, shape and location.

I agree, my father had a Singer Le Mans when I was in the womb, my mother told me a story about how the "Carden shaft" ( not a term you hear nowadays) came through the floor and cut her leg which scarred her for life. I suspect this is not a Le Mans version as they had a different rear end to accommodate twin spare wheels.

The car isn't like any pre-war Riley I've ever seen and I must have seen and photographed thousands. Happy to be proven wrong though.

I'm no expert on the various models, but the badge is very Riley like. I'm likewise happy to be wrong.

In that case, and going with the Singer proposal, some sort of Singer Nine Sports, or Sports customised/stripped to look like a Le Mans?

Looks close I'd say.

Yes, in 1959 or thereabouts a friend had a Singer nine sports that, apart from great scruffiness, looked much like this. As I understood it, the original Singer Le Mans was a Nine Sports with a few enhancements - one of which in the later cars was a six-cylinder 1½ litre motor.
