Trying to bring back to life a pretty old waterpump off a 72 Spitfire. The car has been stood for 15 years, but had a recond engine and gearbox fitted before being parked up. previous owner started stripping random parts and left the difficult stuff. Not surprising looking at the state of some of it.

Got the water pump and thermostat hosing finally off and stripped apart. Planning to rinse out all the old crap and then angle grind off all the build-up as best as possible. Is there anything I can paint / treat the inside with prior to reassembly or just put back as is?

Any suggestions as to what to paint the outside with? Thinking red oxide to rust proof then a topcoat of some sort?

As above, not sure it's worth persevering with an old water pump? Especially if they're not expensive, just fit a new one and have one less thing to fail in a year or so.

Currently rebuilding the RV8 in my Land Rover and whilst the old water pump looked OK, I just fitted a new one last Saturday for peace of mind.

Honestly I would just replace the water pump.

I can supply you with one for £35 + VAT and carriage. They are cheap as chips,,

Thanks for the advice and the Land Rover build looks good. Hope mine looks that tidy when its done.
As I had an order pending with Paddock, I've added the pump on to it as its the same price, but thanks for the offer.

Going to be a couple of weeks on and off to rebuild the engine, fit the gearbox and bolt all the ancillaries back on.
Any suggestions as to what paint to use on the exterior of the pump housing? Does it need to be high temperature or not?

Yes, I would say it would need to be high temperature. What are you painting the engine with? The same stuff would probably do, though if it's a refurbished pump it might already be painted when it arrives.

tms 996,

All good advice above, but apart from tboydy, who must be into Spits, no one else with that experience. You will find that in abundance at the several Triumph or Triumph based websites, https://forum.tssc.org.uk/ , https://www.clubtriumph.co.uk/forums/ and https://sideways-technologies.co.uk/forums/

Glad you have elected to replace as that is what I would have said!

Good luck!
John

More than twenty years back I rebuilt a BMW M20 engine, taking it to 2.7ltr by the tried and well tested route. Refitted my existing water pump that displayed no apparent fault, is spun freely by hand with no free play in it's bearings. 150 miles later I was on the side of the road with a very hot engine, a siezed water pump and a snapped fan belt.

I learnt my lesson on that day!
