Alright you get to join in with tonight’s pub debate:


What is these Fwd naturally aspirated car you could buy??

Currently arguing over:

Honda Integra type R
Renaultsport Clio 182 Trophy
Lotus Elan M100

I’m sure there are others…

you could buy any one you like I guess, or two or all of them if you couldn't make up your mind.

Of those, I'd buy the Clio.

Free choice, I think the MG ZS 180 is a great option, and the fact it's a bit more different/oddball appeals to me (which is partly why I owned one).

What is "the best" fwd na car? Who knows. Buy what you like.

I much prefer RWD, but do like N/A petrol engines - albeit with more cylinders.

That's unfair, there are plenty of fwd cars that drive exceptionally well.

It's just not the optimal platform for laying down meaty amounts of torque/power from standstill or out of a damp corner.

I’ve had a few of what are considered the best FWD cars ever and for me, nothing got to me like the Clio 182 Trophy did. Just magic.

Shoutouts to the Ford Racing Puma and Mégane R26.R also.

The thing about the Puma is that it largely owes its dynamics to the Mk4/mk5 Fiesta.

While the Mk5 had the 1.6 Zetec S (some people say the Mk5 is only a facelift of the Mk4, which is an opinion I recognise exists), the basic chassis is really, really bloody good, and even with only the 1.25 Yamaha Zetec-S, they properly rip along a country road if you commit to things.

While I've always preferred Rwd & Awd to Fwd, I can see the appeal of an Integra Type-R or the old EK9 Civic Type-R.

It’s weird how everyone raves about the Integra Type R.

We had a DC 5 for about 6 months. Never got on with it. Everything felt so tinny and flimsy and like it was cheap and nasty.

Engine brilliant, gearbox ok, handling good.

What is it they say, never meet your hero. But at least we tried one.

I have only had a Clio Trophy from the list. Absolutely brilliant car. The only car I really regret selling. The integra type r is supposed to be good. I have never driven one though and feel I have missed the boat now.

As a more modern fwd the megane 265 is supposed to be very good as well.

The Renault for me as I found the Integra was over hyped.

Of course a rear driver with LSD is where it's really at.

The best front drive cars that I’ve owned over the years in no particular order:

Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 and 309 GTI
Renault 5 GT Turbo
Citroen BX GTI 16v
Clio Williams II
VW Golf GTI 16v MK2
Peugeot 106 Rallye 1.3

All great cars noting that the French seem to have the knack when it comes to performance hatch backs.
