Hi, trying to tax my newly acquired car and I have the green slip v5c/2, the gov website is asking for a 12 digit ref no but the on green slip is only 11 digits so will not work.

Does this mean I can’t drive it until the new log book arrives ,presumably it will have a 12 digit no, sometimes the log book dosnt arrive for weeks.

None of this is my fault .

The 12 digit number is only on the new v5 I think, if your new car was already taxed you will have until the end of this month before you need to tax it.

It's not, but they wont give part of a months tax back to the previous owner so it will be taxed till the end of the month.

Your right, gov website site says new owner has to tax a newly acquired vehicle. No bonus as it’s exempt as it’s a 1964 car but I still can’t tax it.

Looks like my only option is to wait for new log book or try the post office, very frustrating

Something isn’t right. I have bought cars and taxed them straight away. You must be clicking the wrong option or something. Although I do believe that you can’t do it after 7 pm or something, probably because their computer still uses floppy Discs.

We’ll have a look yourself, I have the green new keeper slip v5c/2 which only has 11digit ref no but online is asking for a 12 digit no, I can’t get any further without a 12 digit no.

On the V5 in front of me, the whole V5 has a document ref no of 1234 123 1234 11 digits those are not the actual digits.

Section 10 the new keeper bit has an extra digit at the front n1234 123 1234

That's a V5 printed in 2016.

The newer one for my other car, the green bit is section 6, but the doc ref no still has the same format, extra digit at the front. That's a v5 from early last year.

Section 10 on mine is from 2008 ie last change of keeper and has no extra digit.

I don’t think it’s possible to talk to a human there, I’ll go to the post office 1st.

8 more digits to try then?

Seems your V5 is probably an old format, mine were all changed due to change of address.

Wrong, it is cancelled as soon as the V5 is changed.
OP. you are probably ticking the wrong box, are you ticking Current owner as you now own it,.. you need to be ticking you have the new keeper slip and not the current V5 or tax reminder.

If it is not the latest issued V5 you will not be able to tax it without a V62 application for new V5. It has to be the last issued V5.
