My nephew has a personal plate on retention and recently applied online to put it on a 1988 car.

Unfortunately the change wasn't accepted and he had to call the DVLA for advice.

He was told that as the car already has a dateless plate on (which it does) he had to remove that first, at a cost of £80, at which time the cars original number would issued. He could then apply to replace this with his own number.

Personally I can't see any logic in it.

Has anyone else had a similar experience ?

I assume you then get the old dateless plate on retention and hopefully sell it for more than £80?

More cash for the DVLA coffers.
