What to do with time warp VW Golf VR6 - Repair, Sell, Scrap?
Discussion
A relation has 1998 VW Golf VR6 which has been in very dry storage since the early 2000s (approx. 20 years plus). The car was about 7 years old when they shunted the front end in 30mph zone (into a wooden fence). Cosmetic wing damage on one side, front bumper broken, bent crash bar, damage to extreme front edge of bonnet, deep scratches to bonnet. The car is exactly the same as the day it happened, was driven home and parked up. The car is an absolute time warp inside, genuinely looks like a new car inside.
What would you do with it? Relative is considering scrapping it. You’d have to repair front wing and bumper, replace crash bar, remove dents from bonnet and respray these parts. And obviously recommission it. Wondering if it’s worth doing, cost-wise.

Disagree. They were not a 'hot hatch' but redefined what a hatch in that segment could be. The vr6 engine is an absolute sweetie, pulls hard in all gears, can be frugal, the cars were very civilised, very usable and bloody quick for their time. I think VR6 was an important car for VW and the car world. If OP doesn't want to save it, somebody should biggbn said:

Are you serious???It sounds like a weekend collecting parts and maybe £500 of paint, to end up with a great car that is worth potentially £5k+, more so if it is not CAT registered.
Bizzare comment. Are the people saying scrap it sending you messages about "taking it off Ur hand for £300" OP?

It sounds like it would massively turn on a buyer as a project. I myself couldn't be arsed to do all that work. Scrapping sounds like an all round waste.

These are one of the worst cars I've ever driven. Wheezy and wobbly. But someone'll love it. Thank you for the replies so far. I personally think it’s far too nice to scrap. I’m essentially wondering if it’s worth taking it on from a financial point of view (paying for the repair work rather than doing it yourself). I know it’s impossible to say but I’m wondering if it would end up costing more to repair than it’s worth and is more suited to a home mechanic / DIY job to make it financially viable (i.e. sell it as spares/repair).

Do you have any pictures of it so we can help you decide? Mk3 Golfs are prone to a bit of sill rust so I’d definitely take a squint underneath it if you can.I’d be interested in it as a project. My Mk2 rebuild is nearing the end and I’m keen to start another project.
Some mags quite liked the mini-GT hatch thing and compared them pretty favourably to the usual BMW
Others like the famous CAR magazine article really didn t like theirs ( nor the MK2 MR2 )

Certainly be worth trying to sell it on a VW Golf fans site - or repairing it for yourself if you like something 90s to drive
