Removing and refitting side valves?

A friend has just called me to call upon my (limited) mechanical experience as he is stuck trying to remove and refit engine side valves (all be it to a generator but I felt this part of the forum would provide greater knowledge).

So can anyone provide me with any advice so I can direct him more accurately?
Can they just be done with a bog standard valve spring compressor?
