Just thought I'd ask the omnipitent PH-consciousness for any ideas/info/experiences in this area..

we have a bit of a problem with a tty neighbour, who, quite regularly (and very regularly in the summer) wakes us up with loud music and shouting etc at ~3am on friday or saturday nights.. sometimes others.

we have banged on the door several times and told him to turn it down.. and he does.. but just does it again the next weekend..

in the summer, it's worse as they're all out in the back garden with the doors open.. and other neighbours have also complained, which results in momentary peace..

we did ask of the previous owners when we bought the house, if they had had any trouble with neighbours, and the said "no, everythings fine, we all have bbq's etc ewtc" but we have now found out that this problem has been around since long before we moved in!

has anybody got any good suggestions/comments/info/experiences with regards this sort of thing?? anything greatly appreciated.

my best idea was a remote controlled circuit-breaker attatched the the main feed outside his house...

The only thing you can do realistically is call the police every time or the local council with their decibel meters.
One other thing you could do is join in the party. Only kidding.

had nightmare neighbours a few years back, out of controll Kids was the main problem, with footballs damaging cars and plants, I tried the diplomatic approach, then the law(i got cautioned!) to no avail. In the end I just started to retaliate, in kind,

I made a particularly loud exhaust for a silly competition, this was fitted to a spare car, so i had to start that up every day, warm it up then move it so I could get my car out, most effective at 8.30 when the Father was on night shift.

They repeatedly trashed the wooden fence that I put up on the boundary between our properties, so I replaced it with evil rusty steel cladding (I ran the family salvage business and this eysore was too rough for our breaking yard, hence it was available!)

When thier 15 year old son pushed my wifes car back, twice, with his cavalier( Yes 15 years old, 14 year old girlfriend with a baby, and yes driving his own car!) I cut the roof off of it with a 12" petrol stihl saw whilst he wet himself inside it.

We had a bit less agro after that.

I understand that you can get Anti social behaviour charges pressed against them by plod now adays, probably the best route.

go round tell him in words of 1 syllable that its gonna stop. If it happens again you gonna batter him.

If it happens again, say nothing just batter him.

IIRC when you were buying the house, the sellers would have completed forms which asks about any neighbourly disputes. Check that form out - presumably they've lied and said all was fine.

Then check with the environmental people and police, to see if there were any registered complaints about noise from the previous owners. If so, you have a case against the sellers.

If there isn't anything on file, then register each complaint from now on. Council will lend you the recording kit for noise monitoring/recording and will visit/write to them. I did this quite a few years back, ultimately the chav tenants got kicked out due to it. One of the drawbacks of putting social housing on new housing developments as well.

Hope you get it sorted - its a pretty stressful problem to have.

Edited to add - Keep a diary of times/dates and the cause of the problem (ie. shouting/music, etc), as police and environmental people will suggest you go round there first and 'have a word'. They like to keep these things 'friendly'.

Rather than talk to him, which could end up in a row, I'd send him a letter saying that unless the situation changes then you will be taking legal advice.

You could list the various incidences and use 'legal jargon' in the letter which might knock some sense into him.

Boy would I like to have seen that!! Brilliant!!

PS: It's the perfect crime because the Chav can't report you because he himself is breaking the law!!

Some people just have no respect for other people around them. I hope you resolve this situation without undue aggro

We ha problem neightbours, we reported them to the police, but they didnt want to know. If you complain to the council and they are put on the nuisance neighbour list, then u are bound by law to tell and prospective buyers about it and it comes up on the local searches as well.
We didnt go down this track as we wanted to sell our house.

Our dispute was parking wars. The ar$hole would park on our drive. His cars were always untaxed so we got him clamped outside on the road. Then he was swapping tax from one car to another, my ex followed him to work one day, phoned the police they stopped him and threw the book at him. He took out fence down one morning, forgetting we had a german Shepherd who was very protective of our garden, hubby let her out - lets just say he had to run!!! and fast! Things like that really - we never got violent although my husband would of loved to but i stopped him!
Revenge is very sweet indeed.

to any of you who have taken whatever action, be it legal-based, or revenge, have any of you actually had positive results?

I can see the authorities doing precisely nothing, and there's the issue of re-sale problems with that route.. and I can see revenge easily escalating to the "Mr X shot my cat" stories you read in the papers....

has anyone actually had any experiences where some action has resulted in the tat actually not being a tat anymore !?!? just curious..

When I first moved in here my next door neighbours were a nightmare. Screaming fights with each other at 3am at their front door, which is 3 feet from my front door, loud music at all hours, not taking their turn cleaning communal areas etc

I reported them to their landlord initially which made things worse for a while. She called me several things which were not nice and was generally unpleasant. For example, one day I was rebuilding the back end of my bike outside. This involved a bit of hammering but it was 3 in the afternoon so not out of order IMO, particularly as they had been screaming at each other for a couple of hours. She sent her b.f. out to 'sort me out' for waking her baby and then went nuts at him when he refused (he had noticed that I was being assisted by my 6'4" big bro and I'm not exactly wee myself)

In the end the aggro stopped for the strangest of reasons. They had a fight, she smacked him on the head with something and then waved a knife in his face which he tried to grab, cutting his hand badly in the process. She then shoved him out the door and he proceeded to sit on their doorstep begging loudly to be let in. I went out to tell him to STFU, but decided to call an ambulance and bandage him up in the meantime as he did not look good (and was making a mess). Since that day they toned it down and we get on great.

So there you are, all you have to do is wait until one of them seriously wounds the other one, you then apply first aid and all will be well!

I really like where I am situated, all apart from my back garden backing on to a slightly dicey estate. Most people on there are completely harmless but theres one chavlett in particular who insists on placing speakers in the bedroom window and facing them out to the world with eminem blurting out his inane offensive drivel. And to top it off - either the same guy or his neighbour has managed to fix some speakers to the tops of his washing line - so when the weather is fine we all get treated to some delightful talentless expletive ridden bks.

I cant tell you how tempted I am to enlist the help of a mate with a air rifle to come and put some nice holes in those speakers...

interesting storey about the ambulance... weird some people aren't they!

popov, simply go to a fishing-tackle shop, buy yourself a £2.50 bait catapult, and fill it with some ball-bearings/small gravel... ought to put a stop to pesky speakers!!!
