I've been thinking over christmas break about my life, and have decided that I would quite like to try something new. I have been inspired over the last couple of years by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, and I am beginning to think about doing something similar. Any PH's currently doing anything similar?

Went to do self-sufficiency in Dorset. Along with film crew, etc.

I imagine it will entail an extraordinarily amount of hard work to have your own small holding, but it must be very satisfying. unfortunately I din't think C4 will be interested in sponsoring me!!!

My sister-in-law and husband tried running an organic farm somewhere in Cornwall. Incredibly hard work for not much reward, oh and you have to like lentils and tofu - a lot!

They also lived in a teepee for a while, but that's another story!

downsizing is the trendy thing to do right now and properties with a bit of land are always highly sought after (at least in the areas I've had dealings in (East anglia, devon, oxon , bucks bath etc)

we rented a house that would have been ideal for this - 3 acres, huge orchard and beds of soft fruits etc.

whilst I can see you can be self sufficient and make some money - I can't really see it being viable unless you can buy the property outright/ on a very small mortgage

I'm not the largest earner in my house now, so I'm hoping to persuade comfort loving other half to allow me to experiment!

And watching over the 4(?) series he appears to be doing very well (Certainly on the homemade pies front)

It's all good, but IS hard work. Having said, nothing tases like your own fruit/veg. Although using chemicals allows it to grow better and yield better. I made loads of my own wine this year (red grape). Smells like octane booster.

If you can convince the woman, go for it. Country living rules, as long as you become a part of the community. (A lot of townshifters don't and if you get enough of them, spoils it a bit)

Only trouble is as she is a partner in a practise she wouldn't want to move far away, so I can't go too rural. Would of fancied Devon as well, do fancy rearing livestock though as well as fruit and veg.
