My contract is about to hit 12 months, and I'm aware free upgrades are often available. Whilst I wouldn't need it myself (have an SE P900) I feel that for my £400+ PA I might as well take advantage and get my girlfriend a nice handset (hers is an ancient Nokia 6100). I use Carphone Warehouse, and am happy to sign up for an additional 12 months. Can anyone recommend a good all-round handset that I should be able to get for zero outlay?

Depends whether you like WinCE or not... I got the latest SPV C500 as a free upgrade. I changed my tarif because I was getting a zillion free texts and using precisely three I was about 3 months out of the year contract and got the phone for free. I like it because it has got a nice little camera, it's an MP3 player, takes mini SD cards and can synch with Outlook, receive e-mail etc... The battery lasts for absolutely ages too.

You can get other programs for it like the Berlitz phrase books. They are quite cool as they say the word/sentence for you

I think I am going to go for the SPV 500 too, although it might not be for everyone. Some people are probably better off with something they know (Nokia) and something bulletproof. If she knows Nokia then go for a 6230, otherwise maybe a SE K700i?

Yup - 6230 an K700i are both very good, can't go far wrong with either so whatever she prefers the look of.

I upgraded to an SPV E200 9 months ago. The phone is fab, but is already worn out and has had to be sent back for repairs under warranty.

As I found out today, a free upgrade is not always on offer!!

Be prepared to haggle and perhaps accept a different network to get what you want. BTW 6230 is a great handset.

I had the SPV phone when it first came out and it was awful. Slow, buggy and annoying to use, but i'm sure Microsoft have ironed out all the bugs in the software by now

I just ordered myself a Nokia 6170...

I've got an SPV C500 and love it! Running Windows Mobile makes it very flexible for a techie like me, but it helps if you're a Microsoft fan. Seamlessly syncs with Outlook and you can even watch movies on it.

If they wont do a free upgrade, dial customer services (150) and press the buttons till you get "I'm going to leave Orange" … then you'll speak to a customer service bod and state you want your PAC number… amazing the offers you get.

Not that good anymore. With Orange since 1997 with a 2 phone contract. Wanted to upgrade in Sept 2004 from a 8210 had since 1999/2000. I didn't even want to upgrade to a top of the range phone (6610? I wanted), but they wanted over £100.

I said to Orange that I could get the same phone for free, on nearly all other networks, on a contract that would offer better value (more minutes, texts etc at cheaper rates - lots of promos). The guy i spoke to agreed with me!

I asked if I could 'port' my number and take out a new Orange contract to get a free new phone and promotional better value Orange tariff. No was the reply so off I went. They don't actually want to keep customers IMO, as they want to use endless promotions to boost their subscriber numbers.

Exactly what happened to me yesterday (see link to thread in post a few above this) which led me to change networks.

Same problems with Orange here, 2 phones, average spend of ~£55 pm, with them for years. No special deals, happy to let me have my PAC code and leave if I wanted to.

The fact remains that I did stay with them, IMHO their customer service is better than any of the other networks. So their new strategy worked, well at least on one customer.

Same experiences as chim_girl here - good average monthly spend with occasional peaks to near 100 quid p.m, been a customer since about 1995. No dice on upgrading within the contract period.

But about six of my colleagues have blagged cheap/free upgrades inside their contract period and spend no more, or less than, me.

I'd be a lot less unhappy if Orange were consistent, but they're not. As such, I'm really very unhappy with them.

Trouble is, I use line 2, which has me well and truly locked in, and I suspect they know it. Cnuts.
