It's my 40th later this month and I'm wondering what to do. The comedy store sprang to mind. Is it still going/any good?

Any other suggestions? London is only an hour from here on the train so that's within sensible travel times.

Don't want to spend a fortune.

I went to the Comedy Store this summer and had a wonderful evening. The comedians were excellent, as was the crowd. The food is superb - massive portions, varied menu and well priced. The cocktails are fab too too. I am sure that this will be a top night out for you. Don't arrive late though! My friend did once and they got picked on mercilessly

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you have a lovely time

Thanks Emma Sounds like a resounding thumbs up. Any idea how much it is to get in?

(Never even thought about eating there!)

Went to the place in Camden not too long ago, food and booze was on the company so don't really remember it apart from the fact that there was lots!

They have a no heckling rule which, while it kept my other half from making an arse of herself again, does kind of sterilise the whole affair, good comedians though and a good night out.

Can't remember. Wasn't too expensive as I'd remember I'll email my friend down the 'ol' smoke and see if she can remember.

Both Friday shows are 13 quid, and both Saturday shows are 15 quid.

I though the food was OK, I suppose, but I'm a fussy sod. 'Diner' food is how they describe it. Crap in a basket is how I'd describe it.

I live for crap food
It's sounding good so far. I know if I push the budget too far, half my mates will cry off

Oops! Just checked the Comedy Store's web site and I'm afraid I've given you a bum-stear. The place we went to was off Old Street, on Domingos St. (Nearest tube stops are Farringdon and Barbican). I've emailed my friend to ask for more info. I'll let you know. If you like big, fat juicy steaks, you'll love theirs Desperate Dan would have been in heaven

Cheers Emma, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. Any alternative ideas considered, but it's looking like a comedy evening so far.

Just looked at the comedy store website. Tickets.... You see, I hadn't even thought of that!

The Comedy Store always used to be good on a Sunday night with the ex-Whose Line Is It Anyway brigade.

I think Paul Merton and Jodie Whatshername(?) still performs there.

All in all, usually a great night out regardless of who is on.

Was the comedy act any good when you went to the place on Old Street ? - was pretty weak both times I went (Comedy Cafe) - maybe I was unlucky (...though I did pull )

Seconded on the Sunday night suggestion. We had a top night out there last year - we went to the one near Piccadily Circus. Food was good, there was a happy hour on long enough for me to get into a fine heckling mood, and they don't mind the heckling, so long as you don't do it quite as much as I nearly did.

Get down there you'll have a great night and afterwards it's staggering distance to China Town for a top late night meal.

Forgot to add - if you go to Jongleurs in Camden -

AVOID TABLE 3 - otherwise know as the "victims" table - its straight in front of the microphone - I held a Birthday bash there and ended up on that table - major p1ss taking from the stage - but we did heckle back.

Fortunately the teenage group on table 2 drew more flak from the comedian as they couldn't / didn't answer back - all good fun.

The first act was a bit weak, though the other people I was with liked her. The last two were excellent. The compere was superb. The only other comedy venue I have been to was Jongleurs in Nottingham and I found this to be fair to middling. What I liked also was the atmosphere, the food and, of course, the cocktails
