X-Y chromosomes
Discussion
Women have XX
men have XY
Due to meiosis (formation of gametes - sex cells) eggs all have an X and sperm can be X or Y.
Names X and Y due to shape. The X carries more information than the Y hence why men are more likely to suffer from recessive disorders carried on the X chromosome...there is often no corresponding DNA to use instead.
What did you actually want to know?!

And because each man's sperm carries both an X and a Y, and contributes half of the XY when it fertilises an egg, then either an X is added to the X in the egg (so producing a girl) or a Y (hence producing a boy).
Which is why you have a 50:50 chance of fathering a boy or a girl.
In extremely rare circumstances the baby can have 2 X and a Y (XYX / XXY / YXX) and you have a child with a very small penis who has characteristics of both male and female. No, honestly.

That explains a lot - I have long hair, can't drive and own more than 3 pairs of shoes..... Is there a cure?
The interesting thing is, with Turners syndrome (XO) the outward appearance is a rather ugly female wheras with Klingfelthers Syndrome (XXy), there is a very sad hybrid of a bloke/woman (big hips, female hair patterns, female mind (poor bastard), but male chopper, etc). Whack it in google (the latter) and you come up with allsorts of oddities. Rather interesting, I think.

Although that isn't technically true!
1stly, why the change from Posture Is Everything ?
2ndly, why is it not strictly true ? I was always under the impression that 50:50 was about right. We're not going into the realms of "from behind gives boys 'cos the sperm has to swim further or at the beginning of the cycle produces girls 'cos the sperm doesn't have to swim as far" rubbish are we ?
(I presume not, you being a student midwife and all)

Its called klinefelters syndrome iirc. you can also get XXX and XO (turners syndrome)
The rates for XXY and XXX are about 1-1000 births!
What are the symptoms for XXX?
Almost completely normal except for subnormal levels of intelligence and lower fertility levels.
Am i describing a girl you know well love machine?

But surely that holds no scientific basis due to the X-Y nature of sperm..... It's all to do with which
wins the egg and spoon race.
See, I'm paying attention
Oi, cosmoschick..... you deleted your post and made mine look bloody silly!

Oops sorry!

I thought I'd do a bit of research following my initial post and found that although it was my understanding you should have intercourse after ovulation to increase your chances for a girl, another theory is to have intercourse the day before, during or just after ovulation for a boy!

I'm a bit confused now. And didn't want to mislead anyone and get sued!
