"The Northern Bank now intends to withdraw most of its current notes and re-issue them in a different colour and style."

Imagine that. You pull off the most succesful bank robbery in history. So successful, in fact, the authorities withdraw the currency! Get out of that one bank robbers!! Government one, Bank Robbers nil.

I think trying to pay in over £22m in case would have rung alarm bells

if you split it down to 10k chunks that needs 2600 seperate deposits

But hang on - I heard the notes were untraceable. So the robbers, with a lot of their friends, of whom I'm sure they suddenly have a lot, can simply go back to the bank and say 'I've come to swap this for the new stuff please...'

By the time the bank realises they've got £22M too much back, it will be too late. They'll have to do it again...

The bank has all the numbers on the stolen notes - so the IRA cant exchage it for new stuff. I bet they are really chuffed holding £26m worth of loo roll

I’ve not read the story too closely; but shouldn’t the bank have at least claimed to know all the numbers.

If they were smart enough to pull this job I suspect a lot of this has already been laundred. This cancelling of the notes doesn't ring quite true, it sounds to me as it might be a message to the public to try to convince them crime doesn't pay.

Was it the IRA?

Northern Ireland currency is relatively rare so it should be relatively easy to render it worthless. However, I had heard that up to 1/3 of the haul was in Euros - so they may be able to make use of up to 7 million. That should keep them in funds for a while.
