I am thinking of getting rid of my 3rd Gen ipod due to it's total inability to last more than 4 hours before the battery goes and I was looking at perhaps buying one of these new Sony jobs. They seem to have received good reviews, but I was wondering if anyone here had one and could give me a more personal view on them.

Looks good to me. I'm seriously considering one as well, so all advice gratefully rec'd...

Amazon have it for £219.99 with free P&P, and spoke to Richer sounds yesterday, they will have stock by the end of the month and price beat that by a tenner. (so under £210)

A guy in the office has the NW-HD1

I was having a play yesterday. Seems well made and sturdy, sound quality was very impressive considering the compression to ATRAC.

Light and very good battery life. I'm considering getting one when I go over to the states next year.

I am off to New York on Sunday and I am considering getting it then though I am worried it may not be compatiable over here? Any thoughts on that?

There was a thread on this last week:

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=147144&f=141&h=0&hw=sony

I just looked at one this weekend, very small compared to the iPod, but you STILL have to use the shite Sonicstage software.

Sonicstage is the reason I want to change from having Minidiscs.

Before you dump the iPod....

Wipe it completely and resync all your songs over. This usually returns the battery life to full, cos the hard disk does less work reading the songs...

US one should be fine, just add an adaptor to the plug.

I will give that I go tonight, thanks for the tip!

However, I did read that the battery life problem was a noted one for the ipod and that you send it back to apple to have it fixed, but I can't be bothered to apy around £90 quid or so to do that. I may buy the Sony for general use, and keep the ipod for in-car entertainment.

If it helps I had the battery problem with my ipod. It got to the stage where it would only last about 30 mins before showing flat. I bought a brand new battery from a third party vendor, although it was the same brand as the original, and fitted it myself. The worst bit of the process was trying to lever open the ipod without scratching it to bits - but it can be done. The new battery just plugs right in and bingo - good as new. That was over two years ago and I havent had any issues since... I think the battery cost about 45gbp - dear, but cheaper than a new player..

The Sony doesnt do MP3's so you will have to re-rip/re-encode everything to ATRAC-3 to make any use of it...

The battery on your iPod could need conditioning to sort it...

The new one does do MP3, Sony have finally relented!

The previous model ND1 or something only did ATRAC

no reason to be sorry! Easy mistake to make.

Sony have been so stubborn sticking to ATRAC only it was a bit of a surprise when this one turned up, especially as it was released just months after the previous, identical (but ATRAC only) model.

If only you didn't have to use Sonicstage, the worst piece of software in Christendom.

Did a bit of online investgation, turns out the only real major complaints about the Sony are its U.I. and the Sonicstage software. However, the ipod isn't without it's faults of course including a dodgy hold button on mine! I think I will see the price of the Sony in the US and make a random, impulse decision there and then!!

Also Sony are offering to mod older ones so that they can play MP3s. An embarassing and expensive mistake on their part

A mate has one, pretty smart bit of kit if I'm honest. I'll stick with my iPod though. Only reason I'd probably change is if I was to take up running or something - the Sony is more suited to this because of the size/weight.

But that's not going to happen....

I have to admit that I am a fan of the iPod.

Its a design classic without doubt.

Indeed. You can knock it all you like but its almost perfect in design and execution.

Feels sexy, simple intuitive controls, does exactly what it says on the box.

Everything else is imitation.

Just a shame they seem currently focused on the iPod photo thing. What an utterly pointless waste of technology....
