Nice article and interesting sums.

Seems rude not to invest the £27 given the growth really.

Thanks for that

Ahhh! I've just started (yesterday) as a call centre bod for the main player in this market.

There's a chance if you open a Sainsbury's, Barclays or Family Investment CTF account (over the phone) you might speak to me. There are 150 of us though, so it's not a big chance.

I wonder if I'll have a direct dial you can call?

Blimmin' good idea though - you can stick up to £1200 a year in, and it's tax-free and untouchable until the child is 18.

<Cynic>

How much is University going to cost in 18 years time?
What new taxes are going to made for young homeowners/renters/buyers of cars...
How are they going to claw this back/pay for it in the first place?

Which is just another reason why this should be Labours parting shot.

Not every government is out to hit the middle classes in the wallet...

Of course, I will apply for our youngest (only one eligible), but I resent the government returning OUR money and expecting us to be grateful.

DON'T TAX US SO MUCH IN THE FIRST PLACE, YOU TERS!!

So, if I understand this correctly, this is only for children born after 1 September 2002?

Damn. That rules out my 10 year-old then.

it is.

But what about all the nippers born before Sept 2002? What do they get?

Do I still have to send Annie out sweeping chimneys?

Nah - you have to apply, but this can be done on-line (or, rather, you can fill in the form on-line and they send you a paper copy partially completed that you then finish off, sign and return by post, including the original birth certificate)

What it can't be done at point of registering the birth I don't know.

Can't find the on-line application link at the moment, but here's the "paper" form: www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/forms/ch2.pdf

PDV6,

Thats child tax credit....

It was child benefit mentioned earlier in the thread, which of course every child is entitled to.

Yeah - I was suprised at having to apply. I guess they're trying to crack down on multiple claims per child, given the general thrust of the questions on the form...

I've been told that you do not apply - vouchers are sent out automatically via the Child Benefits database. If you're on full family tax credit you get £500, tather than £250.

Yeah - its the Child Benefit you have to apply for and if you've done that then there's no need to apply for the vouchers.
