So our dogs got a bit of the old doggy I.B.S. and the vet's recommended a food change from half bowl of superchunks and mixer a day to about 400-500g of JamesWellbeloved turkey and rice kibble a day. Coincidentally the vet's stock the required food....

Now it's sorted out the old buggers I.B.S. but it's putting a serious dent in my wallet. Are there any alternatives to this which might be cheaper? and won't knacker up his I.B.S. again. He is a dog after all!!

He's an adult labrador and we can get a 15kg bag of food at a cost of about £36.00 a bag.

That's Ben in my profile picture......everybody....awwwww!

Our (large) dalmatian had the same problem from being a puppy. We paid for the expensive vet food for a while, but any lamb/rice dry food for sensitive digestion should be fine - we use the big bags of Pedigree stuff, and it works out a lot cheaper.

Royal Canin 'Giant - Adult'.

Not sure the price but there is usually good discount for qty as we buy > 360kg each time*

None of the proprietary pet foods worked for my last Springer.

In the end we fed her on 'human' food, a lot of rice based things that were easy to digest.

Seemed much happier

Where from? We were looking for an online pet food retailer since the pet foods shops seem to be rather expensive and not 'big' quantities.

I feed my Husky on Chicken & rice or Lamb & rice kibble and also added some cooked mince meat (the cheap stuff from Tesco's).

Can't remember the brand but it's not JWB and is fairly cheap at £18 for 15KG.

He's a fussy git who will go on starvation diet if he does not like it ..

Without the mince - he ignores the kibble.

Father,

If it's not too much trouble could you let me know the brand and I'll look into it.

Thanks.

Direct from the breeder in 18kg bags. Professional price seems to be about 35 euros IIRC.

Bakers Complete Sensitive did ok for my dog(Carin Terrier). If you want tinned food then Butchers Tripe and it's varieties are gluten free. Mine's currently on a vet supplied diet as he's got a chest and kidney infection along witha slow heart rate. I thought he was breathing his last on Thursday as he kept having what looked like strokes. Fortunately , the vet says these were only very minor and he should have no permament after effects.

Another Vote for bakers complete from my ageing collie, i normally pay around £17 for a 15kg bag - from Makro - or local animal feeds supplier

Our dog get's these as well, they're like mini-epileptic fits. Poor beggar's eyes pop out when it happens and there's nothing you can do other than, hold on to him, to stop him from trying to get up and walk into things and put your hand on his nose, so he can smell that you're there.

mx5, dontlift.

Will look into these as well, keep the suggestions coming.

Thanks.

is this -> www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dept_id=8&pf_id=3014 the one? I've got Macro membership so I could probably get it the same price as you.

My old dog used to suffer from skin complaints and asthma like symptoms, plus he would throw up most branded dog foods.

We were finally given a recipe from someone who used to rescue a lot of dogs. We made it up once a week - it consisted of turkey mince, bran, lentils, rice and pearl barley, simmered for about an hour until it became a thick consistency and it could be kept in the fridge all week or frozen into individual portions. He loved it and it didn't have any rubbish in it.

This is exactly what my parents dogs eat - they love it, but also love tripe so much so that they get a bit nasty and often chocked from eating it too quick - my parents have stopped the tripe now - thank god - it smelt horrendous!!

Big old mongrel about 11-12 yrs old. She gets a tin of Pedigree and a hand full of mixer once a day. Rest of the time she just hoovers up after the kids.

Mine gets fed on JWB "Duck & rice, got fed up of lamb/turkey & rice. He's waiting for the Deer/rabbit varieties to be realised. He is a lurcher after all

I guess this type of food maybe considered more expensive when compared to tinned/mixer stuff, but I've used it for ages now and don't really notice the cost.
