Do you have to return a mobile phone at the end of a contract?

I am with T-mobile and had phone for a year, then upgraded for a year and now want to end the contract. Will they ask for the phone back?

As long as your ending outside of the agreed contract the phone is yours to keep.

Nope. It's yours to keep.

On the other hand, if they do ask for it back, tell them they will either have to pay about £100 or sign up for a minimum 12 month contract

Even if you're within your contract period, the phone is yours to keep. You may have to pay the rest of the contract fees however if you're still within your minimum term.

voda kindly sent me 2 phones when I upgraded. As they couldn't/wouldn't pick the phone up from my house on a Saturday & I work at different clients during the week I told them I was keeping it.
That was 3 months ago. One more & its ebay time!

Always handy to have a spare, assuming its unlocked. My phone is in the shop after one software crash too many...

You've paid the cost of the phone by repeatedly handing over your monthly fee for the duration of the contract.

'Tis why the same phone would cost you more on PAYG.
