Insurance Claim
Discussion
I spent £850 on my camera plus flash card, the cost of the camera itself being £750. It died recently, and Im making a claim on home insurance (had it insured as a seperate item)
The price of the camera now is under £400. What is likely to happen? Im hoping I'll get 850 to spend on a new camera, but worry that the insurers will try to replace the camera with a model I dont want, or will offer me the value of the camera today.
Ive never made a claim before, and dont know what to expect

Well, my dad's really old SLR broke last year and as it was no longer in production the insurers looked up which of the latest ones matched it spec wise. Then simply paid the rrp of that one into his back account

I dont have an answer, but surely if its down as a seperate item it has a specified value that they then have to pay out.

If they offer you the value of the camera today and you go and by the same camera whats the problem.
camera works
camera breaks
insurance pays out
you by same camera
= camera works
end of story
mind you they could say your camera was only worth £300 as you can buy a new one for £400 and your was old. Depends if you have a new for old policy, check the small print.
I had to claim for my Fujidigi camera just over a year ago. It was a finepix, the one designed by Porsche, so looked quite cool. It had a large lcd screen on the back which you could actually see without the aid of a microscope.
The ins.co. gave me some vouchers for Jessops to the value of the equivalent camera which they based on the amount of megapixels. I had to really stamp my feet to avoid getting a £200 toy camera....
Cameras come down in price, so the £600 I paid originally was completely irrelevant.
Gits.

Give the customer services a ring if you are unsure as to how they intend to deal with your claim.
I'm not too sure on the way that Lloyds insurance works (Insured with Direct Line myself), but when I had to claim for my plasma screen a few months ago, I was given the opportunity to choose (within reason of course) which model I recieved as they knew that electronics items were very much down to personal taste.
However, they did tell me that if the model of plasma screen that I was claiming for was still on sale, I would have to accept that one or pay any price difference if I wanted any other model.
Dunno if this helps any?
