Just converted a few snippets from some old VHS footage I took in 1992 into "wmv" format

If you want to hear "that" howl and XH558 in the air, right click link and "save target as" (7 mb approx)

www.foxesmeadow.com/Vulcan1.wmv

Added this - 558`s last air display at Cranfield in 92 including a formation with the Red Arrows

www.foxesmeadow.com/Vulcan2.wmv

Not up to usual digital standard obviously and there`s more if anyone wants it!

Yes, well, moving on...

Thanks taking the time to post that up Ian. I can't understand why I used to take the Vulcan so much for granted.

Superb, thanks. As a young meggy I'd get a regular dose of these - Waddington at the time iirc - and the Lightnings from Binbrook as well. Awesome. Inevitable I'd end up in the RAF at some stage

Amazing to think that the design dates back to 1948 - and that the same individual was resonsible for the Anson, Manchester, Lancaster, Lincoln, Shackleton and Tudor (Roy Chadwick).

That would rattle Mrs Miggins tea cups Absolutely lovely. Love the way they could display so close to the crowd back then too. Only way to really appreciate such a thing of beauty and power.

Anyone remember the name of the Russain test pilot that used to do the displays in the UK - did a manouvere known as the "cobra". Brought his SU 27( I think?) in a low pass and almost stopped dead in the sky, bringing the nose of the aircraft up as he did so, before hitting the afterburners and climbing vertically into the heavens. Will stick in my mind forever, just like the noise from a Lightening and a V8 at full chat!

The RAF really did hammer that Vulcan.

Don't expect to see similar when she returns to the air.

I've got some video of 558 landing at Mildenhall in 1989/1990 IIRC and the pilot really smacked it onto the runway. Big bounce

The absolute bollocks!

Took my little lad (4 1/2) to the Air Museum at Coventry Airport before Christmas. He totally loved getting inside the Vulcan there, but I don't think he really appreciated what it was. He will now!

Ace, thanks.

recommend the Air Museum BTW. I got to sit in a fighter with the cockpit closed, and there's some amazing old stuff there. Even the missus enjoyed it, I thought she'd be bored rigid.

It wasn't just ONE Russian pilot who performed the "Cobra" stunt. It was a standard display item for nearly all routines done by the Sukhoi Su27 or the MiG 29. The pilot who introduced to the UK was chief MiG test pilot, Anatoly Kovchur.

Just watched the video. Genuine Lump in Throat moment I'd say.

Totally appropriate comment from comentator John Blake too - there are times when staying quiet is the right thing to do.

It`s fair to say that I remember a very subdued and sad crowd that day - and the commentators voice (when he did speak) was someone fighting back tears

Still - fingers crossed that 558 might make it back to the skies if the lottery fund and donations make it happen

I think it`s www.tvoc.co.uk if anyone has some pounds they`d like to contribute.

Ian,

You might want to post a link to your videos
to the "Did you fly the Vulcan?" thread on Pprune...

www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?s=83183d6e71e414d1e103e76fd7ba1071&threadid=111797

(2 years old and going strong) - lots of ex-Vulcan
crew reading and posting to that - there's a good
chance that whoever was flying it on the day of
your video might be pleased to find you have a
record of it.

Fantastic footage.

Cheers,

Ed
