5 years for smacking, from today
Discussion
Now, I've got four kids and they're all very well behaved, polite and considerate of others.
My wife and I decided that, as a last resort, to get important messages across, we will occasionally smack the kids (at toddler age). For example, one of my daughters would occasionally run on to the road if she saw a friend on the other side. We told her many times of the danger and would explain it clearly to her. However, it became clear that the only way she would understand the importance was to have a "slap on the wrist" - which did the trick. We always felt we were being good, loving parents - apparently not. We were, in fact, criminals that need to be locked up for five years. What we should have done is raise a bunch of chavs - of which one or two might not be run over.
Also, the law is totally ambiguous. It states that you can smack a child providing it "doesn't leave a mark", so:
Every smack will leave a mark - might need a microscope to see it sometines.
How big should the mark be?
What colour should the mark be?
How long should the mark last for?
What about black kids, who are less likely to mark?
To my mind, the Government has cocked up big time. If someone is a bad parent and doesn't love their kids, they'll find a way of abusing them without beating them up. As it stands at the moment, you are punished for being a good Mum and Dad. If the Government wants to help kids and parents they should put their efforts into "supporting" them not punishing them.

Better go and give mine the next few years worth of whalloping now then
This is a law I will not be complying with. I have a duty to bring my children up to be well behaved and learn the boundaries.
TBH, as they get older I rarely smack, but I reserve the right to chastise my children in the most appropriate manner.
It is not now, nor will it ever be the role of the state to interfere in the upbringing of your children.
Beating is obvious and different, but in the context of a loving parent, a necessary smack is a good thing.

No no you have it all wrong. You have to reason with a two year old, and help them understand how what they've done is wrong and not acceptible in a modern democratic society with laws and regulations shaped over thousands of years for the good of ones common man. You'd best start with greek philosophy to give them the full background.

I totally and utterly agree. I have smacked my kid to get a message across. Never hard, just enough to let him know he's done something that warranted it. It was always a last resort, after having told him, "if you do that again you'll get a smack", etc. He is now (without wishing to sound too proud of myself) probably the best behaved kid I know of. I do not need to smack him now, because the sound of my raised voice is enough for him to understand I mean what I'm telling him. If it had been up to my wife he would never have been smacked, and he now walks all over her, but not me.
I don't have kids yet, but I agree with your point of view.
I've had one or two good hidings when I was younger (I'm sure I didn't deserve them at the time
) and on the whole it didn't do me any harm.
Just add it to the other pile of idiot laws we shouldn't take any notice of.
They can't lock us all up, so maye they'll delare the whole of the UK a prison. After all, prison is all about loss of freedom...

I occasionally got smacked as a child if I did anything wrong but it had the desired effect of making me behave! I had respect for my parents, knew how to behave in public etc.
Kids these days seem to do what they want, when they want and irritate everyone else around them whether it's in a restaurant screaming, running around supermarkets etc and most parents seem to have absolutely no control whatsoever.

hmmmm I am clearly out of touch here in the UK I need to find another place to live. I was in a nice pub one evening last week and the girl behind the bar was very pretty and very sweet. It is a shame that some chav had carved a chunk out of her face. At the time I remember thinking that the punishment for such a crime ought to be a series of very public and very severe beatings of the kind that leave scars forever. Just like the scar his victim bore. On questionning the litle girl she knew who had done it and indeed had gone to the police. However, the knife user was still at large because of some technicality.
It is high time we acted. The law has failed us and the magistrates and judges should be punished.

So a parent can get 5 years for admonishing their child yet a pikey can sue them if he trips over and hurts himself in their house whilst robbing them?
Surely now the limit has been surpassed whereby the feckless and the lazy are treated with favour merely based on their incapacity to earn

Anyway, this law sneaked through pretty silently didn't it? Sneaky
ers buried the news no doubt. Still, at least all parents now have a valid reason to despise nu labia... One more nail in their coffin
You can bet the state will be pretty quick to interfere if your kids are misbehaving... Never mind organise a piss up in a brewery, this lot couldn't organise having a shit if they had dysentry. Arse

My parents hit me a few times when I got a little, shall we say, overambitious as a child. But never anything severe, and I learned my lesson. I'm relatively well behaved... er at the least I have respect for authority and for other people/other peoples' property. Unfortunately my parents decided to take it easy on my younger brother, since he was born just as the "Children should be spoiled" movement was building momentum, and now he is a chav in training since my parents let him walk all over them.
At any rate, keep me updated on the Revolution... I'm not too busy this summer...
