Having trouble playing your purchased tunes on anything other than iTunes or iPod?
Get your mits on this then;
www.hymn-project.org/jhymndoc/
I just tried it on an album and it seems to work ok. Read the instructions very carefully though and use at your own risk.
Enjoy!

I can see why this software has appeared but it does undermine the whole system that apple has put into place. They have been very lenient with the DRM. I'm not sure if this is a step in the right direction to be honest.
I disagree.
I play my music via a couple of Squeezeboxs and as of yet, they cannot play DRM .mpa/mpb files. Since I've bought them legitimately, I should be able to choose what I play them with, surely?
If Apple give the codec to Slimdevices and they subsequently are able to make my Squeezebox play the songs then I'll be happy. Until then, I'll be using this.
I agree that it should be possible to play it on other machines, though obviously I can see why they want to keep you with in the system as it were.
I was thinking more along the lines of record companies stopping the whole thing because the music was appearing on p2p networks. If this software is used irresponsibly, which you appear not to be doing and which the site warns against, then I can almost certainly say that the record companies will either stop it all together or make draconian conditions in the licensing agreements which will undermine the whole concept.

Fair point and one which I agree with.
To be honest, i don't have a problem with Apple's approach to DRM. It is, as you say, pretty generous and only the avid pirater would have a problem with it.
In an ideal world, Apple would bring out something as good as the Squeezebox and then I'd just swap to that, problem solved. I thought that's what Airport Express was going to do but, unlike the Squeezebox it doesn't have an IR remote and a seperate graphic display, so you have to control your music via a computer running iTunes.
...and Apple's policy is not to release any DRM stuff to third parties (Like squeezebox, ROKU) so these poor people are hamstrung.
It's not that Apple *can't* work with these vendors, it's just they *won't* even though a draconian NDA with the vendor ought to keep the whole scheme buttoned up nicely.
And I'm not sure I blame the record companies for demanding DRM: music isn't free, nor should it be as some wag suggested. It costs a f*** of a lot of money to put a decent album together - why the hell should artists/labels then give it away for free???
And don't get me started on those idiots that think "all information should be free". How naive is that???

Not at all... it's just that, like so many things in life, there are so many shades of grey to this issue - it's not just black and white.
I plan to use Hymn to de-DRM music I buy simply because I want it to stream over my home network to my Xbox running Mediacentre.
But even the hymn site says "INFORMATION WANTS TO BE FREE" which is so much ballcocks. My band's music does not (say) want to be de-DRMd for free distribution on Kazaa, but it does want to be flexibly DRMd to play on portable devices, home media servers and so on.
The DRM stance of the RIAA/IFPI et. al., which ignores fair-use arguments, handily ties in with desires of business to lock people into technology/products. That needs to change...

Bang on the money.
Incidentally, I checked out your site, Stryngs. Some cracking songs on there Chris, good work.

I've been surprised to find that I can't transfer music that I've bought from the Apple Store from my lap-top to my desktop computer - both Apple. The files appear to transfer, but they're greyed out in the Music Library folder and won't appear in iTunes. Strange and annoying!
Have you got both machines authorized to the same account ? Because it should work.
