After reading on many "favourite movie" threads, about the film "The Big Lebowski", I finally bought the DVD yesterday. I have to say that I was pretty disappointed in the movie. I suppose it was okay, and I'll probably watch it again, but it didn't really sail my boat.

Anyone else seen any movies that have been highly recommended, but the the content didn't live up to the hype?

I quite like it, in that something so weird can get made.

Shawshank Redemption - that seems to have much more hype than it deserves.

DD and BL are both love it or loathe it films. I didn't like either first time round, and I'm still not a big Donnie Darko fan, just not because I don't like the film.

The director had a lot of grief getting it financed and produced, eventually he reached a compromise with the studio whereby they gave him relatively free reign but he had to keep the film to an hour and a half. He went about 20 minutes over and they cut it quite ruthlessly. The original DVD had the cuts as extras (they're very good and real eye openers) and the new extended DVD has them back in the proper places.

Big Lebowski; depends how many stoners you know...

When I first saw Lebowski I thought it was ok, but nothing at all special. I watched it again a few weeks later and thought it was funny. The next time I thought it was great. Now it's possibly my favourite film.

Lost count the number of times I've seen it.

It's easily my favourite film of all time.

It's hard to say. The script is fantastic, every line of dialogue is funny. The performances are outstanding too. Just lots of little things...the way a line is delivered, the expersion on someone's face. I don't know, I can't describe it. But when I watch it now I'm laughing from start to finish.

Maybe someone else can explain it better

Some gags are pretty funny - nailing the piece of wood on the floor when the door opens the other way, ashes drop in the ocean at the end. But nothing exceptional indeed.

I hated the Fifth Element when I eventually saw it.

I think you explained it pretty well.

Its definitely the subtleties that make it. As you say, expressions, just the way certain lines are delivered.

I dunno, it just is.

I have some friends who also scratch their heads at why I'm obsessed with the film. Others get it also.

To illustrate how badly that film affected me; I have a grubby brown dressing gown, a poster of Nixon bowling in my lounge, and have been addicted to white russians ever since I first saw it....

I'll get my coat....

Big dissapointing film that everyone says is great? The Alien series - so boring I end up falling asleep through all of them. If you want to see Ridley Scott doing interesting sci-fi, watch Blade Runner

Agree on the Big Lebowski - a tremendous film that grows on you with every repeatred viewing.

It is in the sublety of the delivery. For me the best parts are the interplay between the central characters. Some really subtle, really nicely written stuff in that film that is played impeccably by the main actors. The wordplay between Bridges/ Goodman / Buscemi is terrific.

For the Anoraks amongs you - in The Big Lebowski the German Nihilists include a woman, who was the donor of the severed toe which was used to trick Mr Lebowski into paying a ransom. The woman is played by Aimee Mann - the very successful singer/ songwriter who did the Magnolia soundtrack ( indeed, who inspired that film ) and has sold a good few albums in recent years...

For the same reason's , I love Fargo too. Which is , of course, also a Cohen brothers movie. As is "O Brother where Art thou?", which also is sublime, wonderful stuff..

" Fop ! I don't want Fop ! " I wan't Dapper Dan ! I'm a Dapper Dan man !"

Agreed, great film, I was laughing practically all the way through it. The characters are fantastic, but it really doesn't surprise me that people on these forums don't get it.

Oh God, Magnolia - was there ever a more willfully weird and in the same way utterly depressing film? And it's nearly four hours long!

Weird, depressing ? maybe.

Different? Certainly. Good? Yes. I think so. But only if I am in the right mood...

Big Lebowski -- I didn't think it was much cop, in fact most Coen bros films leave me cold apart from Fargo. They tend to overdo the 'surreal' segments more than is necessary IMO.
Magnolia -- love it, overwrought, melancholic and I suppose you could say 'depressing'. Great cast too.

I saw Lebowski on Friday. I thought it was hilarious.
Dont usually like Jeff Bridges or John Goodman particularly, but they were both perfect for the very different parts they played.

Didnt the Cohen brothers also do O Brother Where art Thou??
That was another classic.
