Been on a health kick since new year, healthy curry not a problem just tikka and some boiled rice... and is fantastic !

But fancy some chinese and was just wondering if any chinky food is healthy ?

Yep - but home made Chinese food can be very healthy indeed. Buy a wok, a Ken Hom book and away you go.

Yep, not all places use MSG

Theres a chinese near us thats won all sorts of healthy eating awards.

Have no idea what that sort of stuff tastes like or contains mind you...

At most restaurants / take aways, you can just ask for it without msg. They add it as powder after the cooking, so it's no fuss to leave it out. A friend of mine says that in Hong Kong they have 2 menu's one with and one without.

I was about to ask what MSG was, but then I looked it up on the Wikipedia.

On the other hand, it's probably safest to keep your eyes tightly shut isn't it?

1) Sparks and Mencer (apparently) do an MSG-free range of foods

2) Isn't Thai food better from this respect

3) You're in company as far as the "Health kick" is concerned

Yes, if you eat the 'proper' way and have more rice than meat/veg dishes, say 2:1

All chinese is healtht in the same way dougnuts and pizza help you lose weight. Last diet I did I ate healthly all the time, apart from every now and again I had a little of what I fancied. Lost 3 stone and didn't miss out.

So yes, it is healthy if you have whatever you want, but only do it once in a while.

Chinese guy wakes up on his birthday and his wife looks over, smiles and says:

"Darling, you can have anything you like for your birthday!"

"Excellent!" the man says. "I'll have a 69 please!"

Woman slaps him and says.

"You can fk off if you think i'm cooking that for you on a sunday morning!"

Depends on the takeaway (you can get 'healthy' Chinese food in restaurants but the takeaways are few and far between), but as has been said before, rice-based dishes are much easier on the stomach than purely meat-based ones. I presume this makes them marginally healthier.

I really do want to try some 'proper' Chinese food though, I mean, the Chinese can't possibly thrive solely on the British takeaway's approximation of it, surely!

Done that but a lot of recipies in the book I have require the addition of Tofu. I have purchased some but not used it yet. Its not supposed to have much flavour so best to marinade it in some sauce over night. Its supposed to be good for you.

Opinions?

From a Chinese person - Tofu is a waste of time. It's a bit of an 'old school' dish - that's not to say some people won't like it.

All 'takeways' are inherently unhealthy compared to their restaurant or home cooked version by virtue of the cooking methods and ingredients. Chinese food (proper not westernised or American dishes which seem to be the most ordered in a menu / in a restaurant by non-chinese) is perfectly healthy. Let's face it how many fat-bastard Chinese kids do you see before McD's et al invaded?

I lived with a guy, Martin whilst I was at uni. He was pretty much the most artistic cook I have ever witnessed. A true master. Take away is factory produced filth (often) but the good stuff is good to the nth degree.

I went to a 'proper' chinese restaurant for the leaving do of a colleague from Honk Kong (at least 60-70% chinese customers). The food was delicious and nothing like what you get from a normal take-away.

I've also been to Beijing but was a strict vegatarian at the time so didn't eat well. By the end of the week I was part man part mushroom. It was a good excuse for not eating some of the more 'exotic' things we were offered though.

As for healthy options, boiled rice is better than fried. Veg is better than meat (on the whole). Forget tofu, it's rank.
