On Wednesday, for the first time in at least 20 years, I have to attend a job interview - sorry Assesmant Day!

This will include Group Exercise, Role Play exercise, Competancy Interview and Written Analysis exercise.

Can anyone give me a clue as to what to expect and offer any tips on how to approach the exercises?

Thanks in advance, as I won`t get to read any replies until Tuesday night.

LISTEN TO PEOPLE and ASK WHAT THEIR OPINIONS ARE!

Very important element which I am weak on.

Go and be yourself Steve, you sound like a bloke with lots of common sense. If they don't want common sense, ask yourself "could I work here"?

best of luck mate

I've run a few of these and also taken part in them.

Group Exercise - they are looking for who is pro-active, who questions, who rationalises, who leads without being dominant. Don't be dominant and don't just sit there and follow every one else.

Role Play - Usually geared around your communication skills and managing a difficult situation, ie. you've got to tell a Director that his son hasn't got the job and why, etc. A tact and diplomacy exercise, whilst getting the message across. (Generally known as a st sandwich).

Written Analysis - Looking for your ability to articulate, getting the facts right, attention to detail, grammar and spelling.

Competency Interview - This is like a normal interview, often held at the end, when they ask you who do you think out of the group should get the job! Beware! lol

You'll probably be observed as well during coffee and lunch breaks (if its a whole day), again to see how you relate to others. At the start of the session, you maybe asked to do an intro, given a blank badge and asked to 'draw a picture that represents you' and then explain it. Light humour is a good ice breaker here.

Good luck

I've forgotten who it was by, but I have a book (20p charity shop job) called "The secret language of success" which is about applied body language. It is really educational and an eye opener, particularly for blokes. There is a section on interview technique as well as "pulling", but then again, it wasn't like the Love Machine needed any help there.

Worth consideration, if you enjoy a good read.

Examples. True life examples of when you have been exposed to varying situations.

Working with different people
Working in a team
Had to prioritise
Worked alone
managed a project to completion

etc etc etc!

You need to be able to think carefully and make sure you answer the questions and provide axamples of what you specifically have done.

Don't lie because it's quite easy to question down and expose weak answers.

See http://doctorjob.com/essential_advice/index.asp?page=4 for interview info.

and http://doctorjob.com/essential_advice/index.asp?page=5 for assessment centre info.

Good luck (I've just been through the mill myself!)

These are fun. They rely on people making valued judgements about you on very flimsy evidence. They work on a thought through stereotype. They predict the way certain character traits will react to question or situations.

The fun is that this is very easily fooled. If you prepare yourself before you go, with some standard situations and then apply them to the situations you find yourself in you can look to be anything you want.

The paperwork ones are easy, the role play is more difficult because you don't get much time to think.

I`m really sorry, but I don`t want to divulge at this time! If I get the job, I`ll (probably!) let you know.

Just been through one of these myself and, indeed have just started work. My advice, for whatever it's worth; in any team discussion/exercise/barely concealed display of mutual contempt, don't forget to "round-up" at the end - go over and summarise all the points you and the group made - and state a logical conclusion of the group, particularly if it happens to be yours! If you were speaking last in a considered, leadership role, that'll stick in their minds.

Good luck!

Good point above - and remember the 4 points of communication

Inform - Invite - Listen - Acknowledge.

Practise a conversation with anyone and it's funny how most of us only do 3 of them!
