Auschwitz: Name that tune

No, not a Tom O'Connor game show from a death camp.

Can anyone tell me the name of the music played during and at the end of BBC2's Auschwitz: The Nazis and 'The Final Solution'?

Haven't seen it yet (I am saving myself for the DVD and time when I can watch it alone, without worying about getting overemotional before bed).
However, some of the music is mentioned here. Does it vary from programme to programme?

The one I particularly liked is apparently Sarabande by Handel, which is repeated regularly through both the programmes that have been shown so far.

The other piece that crops up regularly is, I think, from the Gorecki Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs (#3).

It's strange that such foul subject matter should attract such striking and beautiful music. The Kenneth Branagh film of the Wannsee Conference ended with a beautiful piece, Schubert's Quintet in C major IIRC.

Wasn't one of the protaganists (Heidrich?) a Schubert fan?

I think the use of Schubert music in "Conspiracy" was to remind viewers that the men behind the death camps were often culturally very sophisticated and intelligent.

FWIW the Gorecki piece is included on a very good Naxos recording (one of the better ones IMO). As you may be aware the Naxos discs are very, very cheap.
