For once is was alone in the car last night. So was able to crank the stereo up a notch or six. I was really into the music when I found myself nearly home with half tracks left to play on the CD. Nothing else for it I sailed merrily past the turning to our village and carried on until the end of the CD. Then I chilled with some classical music at a lower volume and made my way home pottering along some quirt back roads. I arrived home a wee bit later than I should have but feeling absolutely bloody marvellous.

So who else waste precious fuel just to get some quality listening time?

I had a strange realisation at Xmas. I had to get away from the family for while and just relax, so I went and sat in my car for a bit.

My Merc has a DVD player in the comand, and I had bought the CD / DVD of the U2 album and had never played the DVD. So (after I had been listening to Vertigo on the CD I popped in the DVD and to watch it. It was in Dolby 5.1 and sounded amazing.

Bugger! That means that all new music will ow be sold in both formats, one being more immersing than the ither..

I feel a marketing con on its way.

Beware music lovers.

Not usually to listen to music, but I've quite often taken the "long" way home from work just to drive around some of the nicer roads/corners/r-bouts near home.

I find it hard to get out the car most of the time, but especially when there's music on. This is particularly since I got a nicer car and a nicer stereo system!

The car as a sociological space is a nice place to be, and the time you spend in there can have a profound influence on your mood. Team this with music to take you to that 'higher plain of existence' and you can find yourself never wanting to leave.

I will happily detour for hours - sod the fuel.

Every time, despite it's cost compared to other countries fuel is the cheapest drug you can get. If the roads clear, your enjoying the drive and don't have to think about chav's, speed traps, war or Bliar what could be better???

Yep, I find I have to keep driving to the end of the album too!

Also, I find different music makes me drive in different ways. If it's lightweight radio pop, I tend to just enjoy the scenery. Classic rock for some reason makes me think I'm in some kind of wallowing muscle car (I start hefting the wheel and gear lever a lot and flooring it on straights), heavy metal turns me into an urban maniac (rev, slam gears, hard corners, get the tyres squealing), whilst instrumental jazzy music from '60s films makes me slacken up a bit - one hand on the wheel, start looking in the rear view mirror for Oldsmobiles full of shifty types a lot, and if I need to take a corner off into a 40/50 zone, I'll do it a bit theatrically (ie unassumingly signal to turn, quite slowly, then go for leather as soon as I'm on the new road.
